DegreeWorks is…
DegreeWorks is a computerized, web-based degree
audit program and academic advising tool that has
been designed to assist students and their advisors in
reviewing their progress toward graduation.
This program takes courses from the student’s
transcript (which are arranged chronologically) and
reorganizes them so advisors and students can see the
completed and remaining degree requirements by
categories.
3
The Office of the Registrar
DegreeWorks does not…
… replace an official transcript
OR
… an advisor
4
The Office of the Registrar
DegreeWorks rearranges a student’s transcript,
which SIMS organizes chronologically, and places the
courses according to the degree requirements.

What is the “What-If” audit?
“What-If” audit allows advisors and students to
process speculative degree audits for students
using their current class history.
Students can use this feature if they are thinking
of changing their majors, minors and/or
concentrations and would like to know how their
course(s) will be applicable to their intended
program.

What is the “What-If” audit?
“What-If” audits may be printed, but are not saved to
the system.
VERY IMPORTANT:
When selecting the requirement criteria for a
“What-If” audit, it is important to select the
Degree Program (ex. Bachelor of Arts) before
selecting the Degree/Major combinations from
the drop down list.
Note: DegreeWorks reflects the requirements for the
2009-2011 Undergraduate and Graduate Bulletins.

You can create a plan for your student for as many
as six years.
Note: Students can only view (but not create and
edit) these planned schedules.

notes of what was discussed with the student.
The Notes feature allows an advisor to add, modify and
delete notes. However, we strongly recommend that you
do not delete or modify any notes
notes.
Once you have written your note:
Click on “Save Note” button, then Audit Tab and
click on “Process New” button for the Note to be
immediately available for all to see.

What is the GPA Calculator?
There are three different GPA calculators:
 Graduation Calculator
 Term Calculator
 Advice Calculator
This functionality allows students and advisors the ability to
calculate minimum grades needed to reach a target
cumulative GPA. It can assist with the accurate mapping of
student paths to achieving honors, avoiding probation,
and/or satisfying personal academic aspirations.

What is the GPA Calculator?
1) Graduation Calculator:
Gives students the GPA needed to achieve a desired GPA,
based on their remaining number of credits and required
number of credits.
20

What is the GPA Calculator?
2) Term Calculator:
Allows students to determine changes to overall GPA based on
possible grade(s) for currently enrolled course(s).
Students on probation, in honors programs or enrolled in programs where
their GPA is critical, are especially recommended to use this calculator.

What is Look Ahead?
This feature allows students to view how a future
course can be applied to their graduation
requirements.
This is similar to running a Planner audit (SEP).
Students mostly use this feature because they do
not have access to process audits from the
Planner.

What is in it for advisors?
 LESS PAPERWORK.
 PROVIDES CONSISTENT INFORMATION
No more “He said/She said”. DegreeWorks provides the
same information to all students regarding their major
requirements.
Reminder: The Notes feature on DegreeWorks allows
advisors to place a note on the student’s audit.
These notes can serve as a reminder to the
student and be helpful to other advisors that
might meet with the same student.
27
The Office of the Registrar
What is in it for advisors?
 ALLOWS FOR MORE MEANINGFUL ADVISEMENT SESSIONS
Using DegreeWorks, and asking your students to
review their audits before they meet with you, allows
students to play an active role in the advising process.
In addition, rather than just reviewing registration,
you can spend more time talking about the student’s
development, choices and future plans.
28
The Office of the Registrar
What can advisors do to help DegreeWorks
function more efficiently?

Make sure to review your students’ major audits;
you
are the experts.
________________
 Provide clear information to students regarding the
department’s major requirements.
 Your suggestions for improvement are always
welcome.

IMPORTANT REMINDER
Note:
The DegreeWorks advisement system tries its best to fit all of
the “In Progress” (most recently registered) courses,
sometimes moving other courses that previously fulfilled the
requirements.
For this reason, it is critical that users understand degree
requirements. This issue should not be a cause for concern, as
long as students are aware while planning their future
registration(s).
All courses will be properly applied during the official
graduation review by the Graduation Auditors.
