HOLSTEIN BREED IN ITALY ( The past )
• First holstein cattle has been imported from North
America on 1930
• Since 1930 to 1980 70.000 holsteins have been
arrived from USA ( both registered and grade ) and
Canada ( registered only)
• First cattle were bulls and heifers from Carnation farm
• On early 1970 A.I. became massive and most of the
semen was imported.
• First A.I. italians bulls were imported too.

- First calf type classification: 247.000

SELECTION OBJECTIVES
Identification of traits for improvement
- Improve milk quality: protein and fat content appropriate for fresh
consumption and for cheese transformation;
- Improve milk quantity, i.e. protein kg;
- Improve functional longevity, i.e. ability of a healthy animal to remain longer
on the farm, taking into account genetic ability for milk production.
DATA COLLECTION
- Performance data (production, conformation, somatic cells, calving ease
and milkability) Production control each month, by an APA operator;
- Animal identification including its parents.

- Test Day Animal Model for production trait and somatic cell score;
- Animal model for conformation and milkability;

and fertility indexes: January, April, August.

Free by Tubercolosis, Brucellosis and Leukemia virus
Bull sires
In the top 1% of Holstein –Friesian for Pft
Bull dams
In the top 2% of the breed for Pft
At least 81 point in first classification and GP in udder
DNA test
Young bulls
Negative for Tubercolosis, Blue Tongue, Brucellosis, Leukemia virus, IBR, Campylobacter
foetus, leptospirosis, BVD and trithricomonas foetus
Free by recessive genes
Checked for functionality of reproductive system
