Perimeter and Area
Equations
Perimeter

When you think of
perimeter think of walking
the fence around the
perimeter of a yard.

You walk the length of
each side and add the
lengths up to get the total
distance walked.
Perimeter



A triangle has 3 sides to
add up.
A rectangle has 4 sides
to add up.
A Trapezoid also has 4
sides to add up.
Perimeter

Triangle:
–
Perimeter =
Side 1 + Side 2 + Side 3

Rectangle:
–
Perimeter =
Side 1 + Side 2 + Side 3 + Side 4

Trapezoid:
–
Perimeter =
Side 1 + Side 2 + Side 3 + Side 4
Area

Area is the surface that is surrounded by a
shape. Examples:
–
–
–
The grass inside of a fenced-in area.
The rug on the floor of a room.
The turf covering a football field.
Area

Area of a Triangle:
–

base * height divided by two
or A = (b*h)/2
Area of a Rectangle:
–
Area = base * height or
A = (b*h)
–
Area = length * width or
A = (l*w)
Practice
a = 5, b = 4, c = 3 and h = 2

What is the perimeter of the
triangle?
P=5+4+3
P = 12

What is the area of the
triangle?
A = (4)(2)/(2)
A=4
Practice
l = 5, w = 4
Perimeter = l + l + w + w or
P = 2l + 2w

What is the perimeter of
the rectangle?
P = 2(5) + 2(4)
P = 10 + 8
P = 18

What is the area of the
triangle?
A = (5)(2)
A = 10
Area = l*w
