Dien Bien Phu
• was the decisive engagement in the first
Indochina War
• Placed heavy artillery in camp in the
mountains
• began to speak of withdrawal
Gulf of Tonkin attack
• President Lyndon B. Johnson and his advisers
feared that the public would not support an
expansion of the war
• the U.S. destroyer Maddox was fired on by
North Vietnamese torpedo boats
Laos
• The United States began a “secret war,” using
the CIA to arm and train an anticommunist
force in Laos
• The conference did nothing to stop the civil
war the Laos
• Communist movement known as the Pathet
Lao.
Cambodia
• Vietnamese support was essential to the 1975
communist Khmer Rouge victory in Cambodia
• many Cambodians welcomed the Vietnamese
as liberators

effectively marked the end of the Vietnam
War
