has developed tremendously since
the days of Domestic Science,
Woodwork, Technical Drawing and
other traditional “craft” and
practical based studies…….















YEAR 7 METAL SKILLS
Year 7 learn basic
bench skills,
drilling procedures
and joining
techniques by
working on an
ALIENS project.
They design and
make a useful coat
hook using a range
of hand and
machine tools.
Year 7 Metal Skills & Processes
Marking out
Cutting
Shaping
Drilling
Smoothing
Heat treatment of the
metal is required to allow
the students to shape it
into the desired design.
This process is called
annealing….
The students heat the metal
until “cherry red” using a
brazing torch which
involves a gas and air
combination in a
specialised workshop area.

Pupils in year 8 are asked to Design & Make
AUTOMATA. This is essentially an interesting
moving display, which utilises Mechanical
Control Systems. During this project pupils
develop the practical skills they learnt in year
7.

Pupils design

novelty mask

forming
process to

Year 8 students designed and built pneumatic
powered arms to lift, move and lower objects to
specific points….
Y9 WRITING SET
The writing sets above have been created as
part of a Graphics Project during year 9.
Computer Aided Design &
Computer Aided Manufacture…
The key fobs shown
were designed and
made using computer
programmes that
assist in the design
and manufacture of
products. This
enables students to
create high quality
products in quantity.
These TACTILE signs were designed with blind
and partially sighted people in mind. They are
three dimensional and so allow touch as well as
sight to be used for recognition.
A Desk tidy made using two types of plastic and two
manufacturing processes as part of a GCSE task.

Traditional Skills
Without the acquisition

and become reality.

product and in order to be so it must
be of a high quality
