LET’S BUILD OUR
KNOWLEDGE!
ASKING FOR, GIVING, AND
REFUSING A FAVOUR
If you are a manager, you probably ask
people to do things all the time! But if you
ask a friend to do something out of kindness
or generosity, you are asking a favour. This
is quite easy to do in English, but it's
complicated slightly by the fact that we tend
to be very polite when we're asking favours.
Shh... Listen!
Listen to the audio while
reading the passage given
to you
Asking a favour
Note that we tend to be very polite when we are asking favours,
using longer sentence structures:
Can I ask
Could you do me
Could you possibly do me
a favour?
Could I ask you to do me
I was wondering if I could ask you to do me
Exaggerate the favour
We do this to make our friend feel important:
a really big
Could you do me
a massive
a huge
favour?
Thanking your friend
Don't forget to thank your friend for offering to do you a favour!
Thank you so much
Add emphasis to your words by showing how important the favour is:
You're an absolute life-saver! Or
You've saved my life
After you've thanked your friend, you can say that you owe him / her a
favour...
I really owe you (one)
... or you can promise a reward...
I'll buy you a drink sometime (to say thanks)...
...or you can promise to do the same favour for your friend:
I'll return the favour sometime
or
I'll do the same for you one day... I promise!
GIVING A FAVOUR
Is there anything I can do for you?
Here, let me do that for you.
I’ll help you (carrying the luggage).
Do you need help with that?
REFUSING A FAVOUR
No, thanks.
Thanks, but it is okay.
Thanks, but I can do it myself.
That’s not necessary.
Thanks, but no thanks.
REFUSING TO GIVE A FAVOUR
Sorry, I can’t.
Yes, I do mind.
I will, but I can’t.
I love to, but I really can’t.
LISTEN AND REPEAT!
Listen to the recording and repeat what the speakers say.
1. Can you help me with my math?
Sure. What's the problem?
2. Could you bring me some coffee?
I'd be glad to. How do you like it?
3. Would you open the car door for
No problem. It looks like your hands are
me?
full.
4. Could I ask you a favor?
It depends. What is it?

How very kind of you, Tata! Please try your hand.

: Sure. Let me know if there’s
anything I can do for you.
: Take care of my luggage for a
moment, please. I’m going to
report my arrival.
: Okay, I’ll do that for you.
: Thank you so much.
Pair work
Make a dialogue on asking or giving favours based on
the situations given in the role cards. Practice it with
your friend, and then perform it in front of the class.
