Information on the
carnival costumes.
As you can imagine carnival is not a one or two day event. It takes a lot of
time, effort, planning and organisation to put a Carnival band together,
leading to a successful event, which has participation, involvement and
enjoyment of all our diverse communities, in the areas where the Carnivals
are held.
In terms of Costumes it takes many weeks of welding; sewing; gluing;
applying feathers, foil paper, glitter and lots of creativity, energy and
patience.
The first step is to come up with a theme or overall concept for the band and
to develop costume illustrations for each section of dancers. Costumes are
then sewn , decorated and fitted to each individual dancer. All this creative
activity takes place in what are referred to in the Caribbean as “mas camps”,
where team work and organisation are crucial to creating an award winning
production.
The larger costumes are usually more difficult to design and build. Huge
frames are created by bending wire into shapes and then covering with paper
Mache, foam and other materials.
Science (Physics) plays an important role, as the costume must be able to
move and dance across stages and streets and not fall apart. Many different
forms of decorations and materials (natural and man made) are used to
transform the costume into a dream of the mind’s eye. Created primarily
from wire, netting foam and paint these awesome costumes mesmerize and
dazzle spectators.
Our step by step video of how to design costumes and how to make a head
band will be useful to understand the practical steps of constructing
Different parts of the
carnival costumes.

What is
this….
Designing carnival
costumes
It is a competition to see who can make the best
carnival costume.
How do we do this well
1. Get one black bag
2. Get a pair of scissors
3. Cut 2 holes for the arms and 1 hole for your head
in appropriate places
4. After you have done that, find any suitable
materials, sequences (e.g. glitter, stars and other
decorations and anything else like that).
5. After you found what you want to put on your bag
6. You can get started
At the end who ever is the best will win a prize.
If you don’t want
to dress in a black
bag you can dress
and design me
and the best thing
is you can still win
a prize
Now puzzle time

•
•
We are going to do a puzzle online
You all can come and try it
After you have all had a turn you can go on the computer and

•
www.jigzone.com ask one of use to put in email and password in
for you.
Then go on internet pic any carnival costume and right click and
save it in desk top (if you cant do it ask one of use for help)
Chose file that you saved it on and upload it on the puzzle and at
the side you get to pick the one that you uploaded and play on it
you can change it easy or hard and make the shapes different
like for example star shape and put it together something like
that it is up to you.
If you get bored of that puzzle do the same thing again how you
got the first puzzle you can get as many as you want.

poems
The best poem wiRio Carnival
Samba music Rio style
Coloured people by the mile
All week long they dance and smile
On rare occasions rest awhile
Carnival is here
Samba drummers, wildly drumming
Costumes startling, head-dresses stunning
Happy children shouting, running
Mothers laughing, singing, humming
Carnival is here
Samba dancers twisting, twirling
Batons through deft finger whirling
Hands round flailing drumsticks curling
Brilliantly coloured flags unfurling
Carnival is here
Samba notes in Rio sounding
Tired arms on drums still pounding
All night long the beat resounding
Twinkling stars above abounding
Carnival is here
Samba nights have now passed
Next year’s carnival will be as vast
New themes, costumes, another cast
Let Samba schools forever last
Carnival was here.
A Poem about the Carnival by Grace KempsterNorthampton Central Library
CARNIVAL
Carnival is exuberance, Carnival is celebration
Carnival affirms life , laughter and liberation
Carnival is infectious - casting rainbows of colour in
grey times
Carnival is generous embracing everyone to partake of
its joys, wonders and compelling creativity
Carnival is street opera
Carnival is arms wide open to embrace diversity,
differences in the common languages of smiles and
delight
Carnival is us, carnival is ours, carnival is a magnetic
force for good, undiluted happiness - just add people to
taste.
The best one wins
