 Minimum 5 years successful teaching or counseling, PPW, or psychology experience with “meets standard” evaluations • Minimum 1 year within MCPS  Included in, or in addition to, years of teaching, candidates must have 2 years of:  School-based leadership experience OR  Assistant school administrator experience OR  Central services administrator/instructional specialist experience

 School-based leadership is not limited to an actual leadership position within the school  School-based leadership experiences may include, but are not limited to:  Providing professional development to other teachers  Developing curriculum and programs  Leading a major committee or initiative  Supervising a student teacher

Administrative Coursework Requirement

Must be completed by Jan. 24, 2014  Administrative and Supervisory Certificate (Admin I)—AP Pool only  Observing and Analyzing Teaching I (OAT 1)—AP and ASA Pool  OAT 1 refresher is provided for those who completed OAT 1 more than three years before application

Future Administrators’ Workshop Requirement (FAW)

For the AP Pool only,  If not currently an administrator, complete the full-length FAW before applying to AP Pool  If a current administrator, take a 1-day FAW refresher designed for your needs  Submit certificate showing completion of FAW or the refresher

RECOMMENDATIONS —AP and ASA Pools

 Minimum of 3 recommendations from principals/supervisors  At least one recommendation from current, direct supervisor/principal  Recommendation forms will be available on the MCPS website

WRITTEN ASSESSMENT

For the AP Pool only:

Once your profile is complete, OHRD will send an email to schedule your written assessment.

 Required: 1-hour written assessment to be completed at OHRD  Each written response will be scored by two independent scorers.

(continued)  Writing prompts include typical AP scenarios  Writing is evaluated on the following: • Following directions • • Problem-solving skills Language, mechanics & tone • Knowledge of MCPS policies & procedures  Minimum score of 20 out of possible 25 points points is required

INTERVIEW for AP Pool

Once entry requirements are met, qualified candidates will be invited to interview for AP Pool.

 Panel of principals/directors will conduct interviews  Scoring rubric will be used during interview  Candidates are encouraged to bring a portfolio of work  A satisfactory review from this panel will be the final step in the approval process

QUALIFICATIONS FOR INTERVIEW

Candidate has. . .

1) applied to AP eligibility pool citing classroom and leadership experiences 2) completed Admin I, OAT I, and FAW series 3) submitted three recommendations, all supporting their candidacy for AP Pool 4) successfully completed written assessment 5) current “meets standards” evaluation

YOU’VE BEEN SELECTED!

 If selected into the AP and/or ASA Eligibility Pool, you will receive written notification from OHRD  If selected into the AP or ASA Eligibility Pool, you may:  Apply for advertised vacancies (after the close of the AP transfer season)  Be invited by principals to interview for specific vacancies

FILLING A SPECIFIC VACANCY

 If selected to fill an AP or ASA vacancy, selection must be approved by the deputy superintendent of school support and improvement.

AP/ASA POOL TENURE

 Length of Tenure: 3 years  AP/ASA Pool Reentry  After 3 years, all candidates will take 1-year break before reapplying  After 3 years in the AP Pool, OHRD or OSSI will conduct an EXIT interview with exiting candidates to help them identify personal leadership experiences to pursue during 1-year break

AP POOL REENTRY

Once eligible to reapply, candidates must:  Submit 3 new recommendations  Submit proof of current OAT 1 and FAW certification (including scores)  Continue to meet standard on all evaluations

IF YOU ARE NOT SELECTED. . .

 You will be informed in writing by OHRD as to why you were not selected for the AP or ASA Eligibility Pool.

 You may reapply the following year.  If you did not pass the writing assessment, consider taking a writing class, or studying MCPS policies and procedures.

 Take FAW and/or OAT1 if taken more than three years ago.

 Continue to meet standard on all evaluations.
