Biomass Suppliers List (BSL)
•
Purpose of BSL is to demonstrate compliance with new
sustainability criteria. There are 4 registration categories:

Self-Supplier
Producer
Trader
Producer and Trader
•
To claim Domestic & Non-Domestic RHI, all participants
must either register as self-suppliers or source their fuel
from a BSL-registered Producer, Trader or Trader Producer
Self - Supplier
•
RHI participants with a boiler of less than 1MWth,
sourcing fuel from own (single) estate (radius of 50
miles) as the boiler
•
Also able to source waste woodfuel from outside their
estate for use in their boiler
•
If self-supplying, to claim RHI you will need evidence
of sustainable self-supply:
•

An FCS-approved woodland management plan or
A felling licence
Self –supplying and producing fuel for sale
•
If you want to self-supply chips or logs for your
biomass boiler, as well as produce chips or logs for
sale, you will need to register with the BSL and do a
carbon calculation
•
By spring 2015 you’ll also need to show compliance
with the UK Timber Standard for Heat and
Electricity. If your woodlands are not FSC/PEFC
certified, then a woodland management plan will
likely be key to complying with the Timber Standard
Producer
•
RHI participants with a boiler of less than 1MWth,
sourcing fuel from own (single) estate (radius of 50
miles) as the boiler

Produces fuel from raw materials (not authorised to sell
to end consumers)
Trader
•
Buys fuel and supplies it to consumers and/or other
Traders
Trader – Producer
•
Combines the roles of Producer and Trader
•
RHI participants who source raw materials from
another supplier (i.e. not using own woodlands) &
process these into fuel for their own use should
register in this category if they wish to use the BSL
to meet the sustainability criteria
•
Self-supply as well as selling chips or logs to other
biomass boiler owners
RHI payments for drying chips or logs
• You can claim RHI payments for drying chips or
logs with a grain drying floor and then use those
chips or logs to heat a property (if using the same
boiler(s)
• You could potentially keep some of those chips for
own use, as well as selling to end users or to
traders (depending on BSL registration)
