The Changing Nature of the World
Things that have remained the same
throughout time
Things that have changed
1500 years ago everyone knew the earth
was the centre of the universe.
500 years ago everyone knew the earth
was flat.
15 minutes ago you knew people were
alone on the plant
The Changing Nature of the World




People and goods have always moved
around the world, though NOT everyone
and SLOWLY
Today, new advances in communication,
transport and technology have encouraged
one global society.
The clothes we wear, the places we shop,
the food we eat, the sports we play and the
TV shows we watch have integrated
overseas economies and cultures.
This process of economic and cultural
integration is called GLOBALISATION
The Process of Globalisation
Bliss & Paine (2005) “GeoActive 1” Jacaranda, p190
Drivers of Globalisation
Transport

Air transport


Land transport


Lower costs, increased people travelling
Rail and road infrastructure have made faster travel time
Sea transport

Cargo ships have increased in size and thus the cost of
transporting goods has declined.
Drivers of Globalisation

Communication

The Internet



Small businesses can market their product globally
People can access information quickly at a low cost.
Satellite Technology

Relay and transmit information everyday, including television,
telephone calls, weather information, and military intelligence.
Drivers of Globalisation

Computer Technology



Instant money transfers, instant information
Provide entertainment and education
Connects all countries in the world through the Internet
Drivers of Globalisation

Transnational Corporations (TNCs)



Large companies that dominate markets
Produce and distribute goods and services
Make decisions that affect people all over the world.
Drivers of Globalisation

World Trade

International Trade



Advances in technology and lower transport costs has increased the
volume of trade between countries.
Money flows into and out of local communities.
Trade Organisations


Finding a balance between protecting local cultures and increasing
the economic benefit of trade.
Intergovernmental organisations work to promote fair trade.
Groups include - World trade Organisation, International Monetary
Fund and the World Bank
TNCs & Globalisation





A company that has its head quarters in a major city with branches
all around the world.
Cheap labour found in developing nations
Products sold in developed nations for higher prices.
This separation of production and profits leads to greater inequality.
Mass producing a product that is the same all around the world, thus
reducing cultural differences.
NIKE ~ The world reknowned TNC
What is the cartoonist saying about the NIKE company?
Do the global benefits of TNC’s
outweigh their costs?
Advantages of TNC’s
Disadvantages of TNC’s
Effects on Culture

There is continuing debate among many people about global
American influences on our culture.

Do you think these shows affect the way you think and behave?
Effects on Culture


Are these shows particularly Australian?
Do you think people in another English – speaking country would gain
a true understanding of the Australian culture from these shows?
