CAUCA, COLOMBIA
GEOGRAPHICAL LOCALIZATION OF
THE TIERRADENTRO TERRITORY
HOW COFFEE CAME
TO TIERRADENTRO.
Coffee came into Colombia
through our neighbor country,
Venezuela.
The
Jesuit
Missionaries introduced the
coffee bean in the Region of
the Meta and Orinoco Rivers,
according to Father José
Gumilla in his book
“El
Orinoco
Ilustrado”
(The
Orinoco Illustraded).
Widely spread by the priests,
coffee arrives at a monastery
in the city of Popayan and then
to Tierradentro, in the year
1834.
The pioneer beans belong to
Coffea Arabica Var. Typica.
(60% of our present crops).

OUR ANCESTORS
MADE OF THE LAND
A HOLY AND
SACRED PLACE
The “Hipogeos” or
Sacred Tombs are made
on top of hardened
volcanic ash (Toba).
Mother Nature nurtures
us
with
products,
nourished by Toba,
giving our coffee its
“Original Flavor”.
NEVADO DEL HUILA
VOLCAN0 IN THE
INDIGENOUS NASAPAEZ COSMOVISION
For us, everything has
life.
The Volcano Nevado
del Huila, (Nxadx in
Nasa Yuwe language) is
a sacred place where
water and fire spirits
dwell.
They regulate man and
nature, maintaining a
balanced harmony.
COFFEE GROWS IN A
SYSTEM OF HIGH
VEGETABLE AND
ANIMAL DIVERSITY
Tierradentro coffee is
not only for man to
drink. It also offers
food to birds and
other animals.
A coffee “finca” may
have more than 50
different
plant
species, most of
which are edible and
marketable. It is a
very complex ecosystem
with
complete biological
charectiristics.
TIERRADENTRO
COFFEE IS THE
BASE OF OUR
ECONOMY
Our
organization
consists
of
1472
families that depend
on coffee for their
economic and social
sustainability.
Coffee
generates
85% of our economic
income to cover our
basic needs in fincas
that are no bigger
than two hectares.
PROPER MANUAL
PICKING OF THE
COFFEE
We believe that only
ripe cherries picked
manually and pulped
the same day, will
produce coffee of the
highest quality.
NATURAL SUN
DRYING
Sun
drying
and
protecting
our
washed
coffees
under specially built
structures, yields a
better
quality
product.
PROPER STORAGE
WILL GARANTEE
QUALITY CONTROL
The Asociación of
Cabildos Indígenas
Juan Tama assures
that
the
coffee
farmer is paid fairly,
and then stores the
coffee ensuring that
the
necessary
parameters are met
to protect the coffee,
the buyer and the
farmer.
OUR COFFEE IS GUARANTEED BY CONTINOUS
QUALITY CONTROL IN EVERY PHASE
A UNITED FAMILY BASED ON DIGNITY, JUSTICE, SOLIDARITY AND
