Carl Jung: Modern Man in
Search of a Soul
Background

Jung combined an
intense
intellectuality with a
passionate
spirituality. His road
to this “middle way”
was the world of
dreams, art, world
religions, mythology
and philosophy.
Freud and Jung

When Freud and
Jung met they
talked for 13 straight
hours!
Individuation

The overarching
goal of Jung’s work
was the joining of
the life of the
individual with the
world of the
unconscious, not the
dark one, but the
numinous and
creative
unconscious.
Individuation

The goal of human
health was to be a
fully integrated
human being at
home in the world of
rationality and
consciousness, but
also in the world of
symbols and
unconscious forces.
The Shadow

Jung emphasized
the importance of
being aware of
shadow material
and incorporating it
into conscious
awareness.
Anima and Animus

For a person to
reach full
individuation they
must find a sense of
inner balance
between the
masculine and
feminine energies
residing within them.
Types and Functions

Introverts need
people and
extraverts need
solitude. It is a
matter of how much
and how often.
Types and Functions

Once we know our
type and function,
Jung taught that it is
also good to try and
engage our weaker
functions so that we
promote balance in
our lives.
Summary

Jung once said in
remarking on his
followers: “Thank
God I am Jung and
not a Jungian!”
