The land is hilly terrain
with rocky soil and jagged
coastlines. Two major
geographical features are
the Appalachian
Mountains and the Boston
Harbor. The climate has
enjoyable moderate
summers and long, cold
winters.

This was a trade center with
jobs like: fishing industry, ship
building, skilled craftsmen, shop
keepers, and raising livestock
like sheep. They settled in
villages and cities involved in
political and civic affairs such
as town meetings. They were
seeking freedom of religion
Mid-Atlantic Region
The land is coastal
lowlands with many
harbors and bays with
wide, deep rivers. There is
also rich farmland with
moderate climate for
farming. The Appalachian
Mountains are part of this
region.

Jobs in this region include
fishing, producing livestock and
crops such as: grain, corn, and
tobacco. They settled in villages
and cities involved in some
political and civic affairs in large
market towns with many
people. They had many
religions, traditions, and
cultures.

coastal plains with good
harbors and rivers. The
warm, humid climate is for
farming. The Appalachian
Mountains and Piedmont
in Georgia are apart of
this region.

Jobs in this region include
wood products and agriculture
with large plantations and
small farms. They had cash
crops like: tobacco, rice and
indigo. They grew food and
made their own clothes. Men
used slaves and indentured
servants for most of the work.
There were few cities or
schools but the Church of
England was the center of
social life.

Large Landowners lived in the South on plantations
and did not have to do much work.
Farmers were not wealthy but the family did the work
where the location decided what was produced.
Artisan is a person skilled in an art form or craftsperson.
They lived in small villages or cities. (Examples:
Weavers, Glassblowers, and carpenters)
Indentured Servants were people who were legally
bound by a contract to work for another person for a
length of time.
Slaves had the hardest life with no choice. They were
captured from Africa and sold to slave traders.
Incentive is benefit given to get someone to take a
certain action.
Specialization is an efficient way to work, and the cost
of items produced is lower. (work faster and make fewer
mistakes) New England colonies: fishing, timber, and shipbuilding industries
Mid-Atlantic colonies: Produced large harvest of wheat, rye, and corn;
Livestock, Fishing
Southern colonies: Produced tobacco, indigo, rice, and cotton
Voluntary exchange is a trading systems that helps
Colonists traded with Indians.
both buyers and sellers. Another word for trade is barter.
Barter is another word for trade.
