3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
1. What is a compound object?
A compound object is a complex object
created from two or more objects or
shapes.
Three types in this chapter:
•Loft
•Boolean
•Terrain
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
2. What is a loft object?
• A loft object is a spline (or 2-D shape) that
is extruded, or lofted, along a path.
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
3. How can you tell if a shape is invalid when
creating a loft object?
• You cannot select the shape for the
operation.
• The 3ds max prompt line displays the
reason the shape is invalid.
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
4. When creating a loft object, which spline is
selected first?
• Either, the shape or the path.
• The loft object is generated in the
location of the first selected spline.
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
5. What are the three ways to place the shape
or path you “get” for a loft object in the
resulting object?
The shape or path can be placed as:
• a copy
• an instance
• Or it can be moved.
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
6. If the Smooth Length check box in the
Surface Parameters rollout is checked,
what is the effect on the loft object?
• Smoothing groups are placed along the path
of the loft object.
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
7. If mapping coordinates are generated for
the loft object, why would you check the
Normalize check box?
Checking the Normalize check box:
• Evenly spaces the map tiling along
both the length and width of the loft
object.
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
8. How do you display the skin of a loft object
in shaded viewports only?
To display the skin of a loft:
• Check the Skin in Shaded check box
(in the Display area of the Skin
Parameters rollout).
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
9. When would you check the Flip Normals
check box for a loft object?
You would check the Flip Normals check
box:
• If the loft object appears inside out
(all or part of the surface not visible).

3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
10. What are the types of Boolean operations
in 3ds max?
Boolean operations:
• Union,
• Subtraction
• Intersection
• Cut
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
11. What is the original object in a Boolean
operation called?
The original object is called:
• The operand
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
12. Which Boolean operation combines
overlapping objects and removes the
overlapped portion?
• Union combines overlapping objects
and removes the overlapped portion.
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
13. What is a subtraction Boolean operation
often used to do?
• Subtraction creates hollow objects or
holes
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
14. When applying an intersection Boolean
operation, from what portions of
intersecting objects is the resulting object
created?
• Overlapping portions create the
resulting object.
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
15. What is the Cut Boolean used to do?
• It is used to create a cut object by
using a second object to “slice” a
portion of the first object
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
16. If both objects in the Boolean operation
have different materials applied, what
type of material is the resulting object?
• A multi/sub-object material results
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
17. From what type of object does a terrain
object generate a 3D object?
• Terrain is generated from splines used
as contour lines.
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
18. What is the Override check box used to do
when creating a terrain object?
• Override is used to remove internal
vertices of a spline shape
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
19. What are the settings in the Simplification
rollout for a terrain object used to do?
• Simplification is used to adjust the
complexity of the terrain object
From: CHAPTER 6– Creating Compound Objects
3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS
20. Which rollout is used to calculate and
apply color to a terrain object?
• Color by Elevation is used to color a
terrain object.
