New Refrigerant Change-over Issues

History of MAC

• • Under Montreal Protocol ( 1987 ) it was decided to replace Ozone depleting substances. – MAC : R-12 replaced with R134a . – Commercial Production started in 1990 – GWP was not an issue at this point of time , though GWP of R134a (1430) is much less than R-12(10890) In 1997 , under Kyoto Protocol , developed nations agreed to reduce emission of Green House Gases – EU Directive to use refrigerant in MAC with GWP < 150 – Introduction in 2011 and all platforms by 2017

Alternate Refrigerants

• To address GWP issue , several options are being considered for MAC – Improved HFC – R134a – CO2 System – HFC 152a – Honeywell Fluid H – Ineos Fluor – HFO1234yf

Final consensus yet to emerge on the choice of refrigerant , although 1234yf seems to be the emerging choice

Issues with HFO-1234YF

• •

Low Toxicity Tests

– Low acute & chronic toxicity

Flammability Tests

– Probability to cause ignition – Auto ignition temperature – Minimum ignition energy Human Safety Test Results still awaited.

India Scenario

Domestic India Market continues to use R134a .

No immediate plan to switch over

Indian OEMs already exporting Vehicles to Europe

Europe Introduction Date – 2012

OEMs already demanding compliance of all new vehicles AC systems to new refrigerants

AC Manufacturers need to support Indian OEMs for the export commitment.

Challenges to Indian Industry

• • •

Confirmation on final results Availability of New Refrigerant for Testing Purpose to Fine Tune the Vehicles for Market Conditions

– –

No Direct Availability in Asia Big Procedurals Issues Imposed by Manufacturers of New Refrigerant , making it virtually impossible to commence Development work

– –

Commercials Patent Issues New Technology Components (HX, Compressor) required in AC Systems to overcome performance reduction with new refrigerant. This will mean substantial new investments for Indian Industry.

Way-Forward

Indian Industry is looking forward for interaction with US and other world Industry bodies for building consensus on

– Time Frame for Change-Over – Funding for the transition for the Developing Nations
