Lactic Acid
System
Lactic Acid System
• After 10 seconds, the body’s stores of PC are
depleted and ATP must be re-synthesized
using a different source:
The Lactic Acid System
• Fuel = Carbohydrates (C6H12O2)
i.e. Carbohydrates, Hydrogen and Oxygen
Lactic Acid System
• Carbohydrates are stored in the body as.......
glycogen
• This is stored in the body in two places muscles and liver
Lactic Acid System
Glycogen
Glycogen phosphorylase
Glucose
Phosphofructokinase (PFK)
Pyruvic Acid
Energy
2 ATP
No
O2
Lactic Acid
Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)
Lactic Acid System
Summary
• Takes place in the Sarcoplasm
• Produces 2 ATP
• Is Anaerobic
• Enzymes = glycogen phosphorylase
phosphofructokinase (PFK)
and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)
Lactic Acid System
Advantages
-more stores of glycogen than PC so lasts longer
-relatively simple process , so quick
-no O2 needed so no delay
Disadvantages
-lactic acid – reduced pH(increased acidity)
= prevents enzymes working
= fatigue.
