What is an Organisational
Structure?
• Shows how RESPONSIBILITIES in a
business are DIVIDED up amongst
different departments and people.
• It shows people INSIDE and OUTSIDE of
the business the different job roles for all
employees.
• It shows who is RESPONSIBLE for who.
Why Bother?
• Helps to bring order to the business
• Helps new employees
• Helps people outside of the business
What is a Hierarchy?
Our organisational structure is also a
HIERARCHY.
If you are at the TOP of the hierarchy
you have more RESPONSIBILITY,
AUTHORITY and
ACCOUNTABILITY!!!
What is the Chain of
Command?

top
Span of Control?
• The person that a worker is responsible to
is their LINE MANAGER.
• The workers that someone is responsible
for are known as their SUBORDINATES.
• Span of Control – the number of
subordinates that a line manager is
DIRECTLY responsible for.
De-layering
• De-layering is the removal of layers
from the organisation chart, what
would be the benefit of this?
