Introduction
Board of Postgraduate Studies was established
in 1985 by an Act of Parliament that was
repealed in 2012 and now falls under the
Universities Act, 2012.
Operations and structure of the Board are
stipulated in statute XXI (Academic Calendar
2012/2013)

 Coordination of postgraduate syllabi and regulations
 Advertisements and admission of postgraduate

 Administer postgraduate scholarships and research

 Administer and process postgraduate thesis, project or
research papers

BPS has achieved a phenomenal increase in the
number of programmes offered. The current number
of these programmes is:

These programs are regularly reviewed and new ones
added. In the past two years, 34 programmes were
revised and 26 new ones were added.

guidelines are being followed
This give an indication of the capacities of the
Departments/Faculties/Schools in relation to:

over the last five years and now stands at 12,945

Graduation statistics for
PhDs
PhD graduate numbers rose from 20 in 2000 to 94 in 2013.
Two were awarded with Doctor of Science, one in August
and one in December from CAVS and CHS respectively. The
other Doctor of Science was awarded in 2008 from CBPS
There is need to push the numbers to over 100 per year.
There is also a big gender imbalance as most of the
graduates are male.
In 2013 there was 61 male and 33 female.
The table below shows the rise of PhD graduates in the
University from year 2000 to 2013.

Analysis of causes of noncompletion of students
 A random analysis of 322 student responses
on why they had not completed analyzed
(see table)
 The majority – 86% was due to personal
reasons
 University specific reasons were only 3%
