General Knowledge Quiz
• What is the maximum operating pressure
of your Holmatro system?
• 10,500 psi
• What type of fluid is used?
• Mineral based oil

General Knowledge Quiz
• True or False: two tools can be powered at the
SAME time by your DPU30 duo pump.
• True. The tools operate simultaneously, completely
independent of each other, sharing only the oil in the
reservoir.
• True or False?: When running, the pump is
always moving fluid.
• True. When the motor is spinning, the pump is pumping.
With the handle of the tool in neutral, the oil will be
circulating to the tool and back. With no tool attached to
the pump the oil circulates back to the tank.

What is Hydraulics?
A means of transmitting power by
pushing on a confined liquid.
Holmatro
®
Number One In The World For a Reason
Pascal’s Principal:
P x A=F
Pressure times Area
Equals Force
Pascal’s Law: Pressure applied on a confined
fluid is transmitted undiminished in all directions,
and acts with equal force on equal areas, and at
right angles to them

This works because:
• Mineral Oil Does Not Compress
• The System is Filled
– Hoses and tools are filled with oil
– There is no air in the system
• The System is Sealed
• The Pressure is the same in all areas
which are pressurized

Let’s Look at Some Examples:
?
If we apply 10,500 psi to this
area how much force will we be
able to generate?
10,500psi (P) x 6 in²(A) = 63,000 lbf (F)
Bottom Area of Piston
is 6 square inches.
Holmatro

Number One In The World For a Reason
Double-Acting Hydraulics
All this means is that the piston is extended and retracted
by hydraulic power. This is how the cutter, spreader and
ram operate and generate force.
Pump

Deadman’s Handle Operation
• Same on all tools
• Automatically
returns to neutral
when released
• Clockwise (CW)
always opens
• Counter-clockwise
(CCW) always
closes
Holmatro
®
Number One In The World For a Reason
Deadman’s Handle Operation
•When at rest the handle is in
the neutral position. This
sends the oil in a U-turn back
to the pump. No motion of
tool.
•Rotating the handle either
CW or CCW directs oil to
either the bottom or the top
of the piston, causing the tool
to open or close.
Holmatro

Number One In The World For a Reason
Deadman’s Handle Operation
•Rotating the handle
either CW or to the
Right directs oil to the
bottom of the piston,
causing the tool to
spread, cut or extend.
Holmatro

Number One In The World For a Reason
Deadman’s Handle Operation
• Rotating the handle
either CCW or to the left
directs oil to the top of
the piston, causing the
tool to squeeze, open or
retract.

Personal Safety - Object Lesson
• When we overlook
personal safety

doing has become
“routine”…

Maintenance and Storage
• Follow these steps after EVERY
use
• Keep your tools clean and in
optimum condition if you want
optimum performance available
at the next accident scene.
• If something doesn’t work
properly take care of it NOW
rather than later.

Maintenance and Storage
Spreaders
• With the pump running and
pressure to the spreader, close the
spreader fully.
• Operate the handle to open the
spreader approximately 1/4 inch.
• Release pressure at the pump.
• Disconnect spreader. Inspect tool
for damage - tips, handles,
couplers, etc.
• Clean couplers and dust caps
before installing.

Cutters
• With the pump running
and pressure to the cutter,
close the cutter fully.
• Operate the handle to open the cutter until the
blades just overlap at the tips.
• Release pressure at the pump.
• Disconnect cutter. Inspect tool for damage blades, handles, couplers, etc.
• Clean couplers and dust caps before installing.

Rams
• With the pump running and pressure to the ram, close the ram
fully.
• Operate the handle to extend the ram approximately 1/4 inch.
• Release pressure at the pump.
• Disconnect ram. Inspect tool for damage - cross heads,
handles, couplers, etc.
• Clean couplers and dust caps before installing.

Pumps
• Place operation valves in neutral position..
• Shut off pump with either throttle control or stop
switch
• Put pump in ready position according to your
local SOPs.
• Check fuel level.
• Inspect pump for damage - Frame, reservoir,
PRD, couplers, etc.
• Clean couplers and dust caps before installing.

Hoses
Inspect hoses for any kind of damage:
kinks, cuts, abrasions, etc.
If the hose came in contact with any foreign
fluids, such as brake fluid, transmission fluid,
oil, etc. clean using mild soap and water as
soon as possible. To prolong the life of your
hose, minimize exposure to contaminants.
Ensure that bend restrictors are in place and
couplers are not damaged. Coil hose.
Clean couplers and dust caps before
installing.
Immediately remove any damaged hose
from service
