Characteristics Of The Ideal Blood
Pump
 Low Priming Volume
 Durable/ No mechanical failures
 Easy to set up and operate
 No Hemolysis
 Or damage to the other formed elements of the blood
 Antithrombogenic
 No anticoagulation required
BLOOD PUMPS
ROLLER PUMP
Roller Pumps in ECMO
 Roller Pumps with Venous Reservoir dominated the US
market.
 Roller pumps predated Centrifugal.
 Centrifugal Pumps becoming more widely used because
of technology improvements.
 New Centrifugal pumps have no shafts, seals or
bearings.
Non Positive Displacement Centrifugal

Blood Flow Monitoring for
BioMedicus Pump
Pump RPM’s does not give absolute blood flow only
correlates with flow.
In line Ultrasonic Flow Probe is used to monitor blood flow.
Ultra sonic Flow Measurement
Flow probe bounces ultra sound
off of red cells and determines
rate of flow from the Doppler
shift created by the movement
of the red cells. Computer
converts rate of flow to volume
of flow (per unit of time or
mls/min). By knowing rate of
flow and diameter of tubing
indexed to the tubing diameter
by the proper sized flow probe.
