Apprenticeship
• Earn while you learn
• 85% of the learning is on the job
▫ taught one-on-one by a journeyperson already
trade certified
• 15% of the learning is in apprenticeship courses
▫ taught at a local community college

considering entering an apprenticeship program

College
• Combine theoretical and applied learning
• Often prepares for employment in such areas as:

Applied Arts (e.g. animation, design, media)
Business (e.g marketing, accounting, supply chain management)
Community Services (social service worker, early childhood educator)
Health and Human Services (fitness, nursing, veterinary technician)
Technology (chemical laboratory technician, electronic design,

• May be a transition pathway: General Arts and
Science Program for two years and then transfer to
University (check transfer agreements)
Diploma Programs
• Two or three years of study
• Usually requires:
▫ Graduation from high school
▫ Grade 12 English (U or C level)
▫ Senior level courses
• Some programs require specific courses like:
▫ Grade 11 or 12 science
▫ Math
 Grade 12 Mathematics for College Technology OR any grade 12
math OR grade 11 Functions
Entrance Requirements for
Diploma Programs
• Averages are usually 65% or above (including co-op)
▫ Highly competitive programs are much higher
• Prerequisite courses marks are included
• Often prefer a good grade in College English and Math
courses instead of a mediocre grade at the University
level
College Degree Programs
• Earn a degree at a university
▫ Some are considered “applied” degrees
▫ Many degree programs qualify for graduate studies and
professional schools (law school, medical school, teacher’s college)
• 4 years of academic study and practical experience
• Requires 6 grade 12 U or M courses
• Examples:
▫ Bachelor of Film and Television (Sheridan College)
▫ Bachelor of Aviation (Seneca College)
▫ Bachelor of Applied Business (George Brown College)
Joint College/University
Programs
• Earn a degree and a diploma at the same time in four
years
▫ Involves a partnership between a college and university
• Admission requires 6 grade 12 U or M level courses
• Examples:
▫ New Media or Journalism at U of T
Scarborough/Centennial College
▫ Nursing at Ryerson/George Brown
▫ Kinesiology at University of Guelph/Humber College
▫ Medical Radiation Sciences at McMaster/Mohawk College
▫ Broadcast – Television at York/Seneca
University

Entrance Requirements
• Based on top six grade 12 “U” or “M” level courses
▫ Prerequisite courses are included
▫ Every university calculates averages slightly differently
 Repeated or non-day school courses may be treated
differently
• Some programs state minimum course averages
▫ e.g. 70% in ENG4U or MHF4U
• Offers you receive during this year are conditional
▫ offers will state averages you must maintain at the end of
the school year
Supplementary Applications
• A written application some university programs
require in addition to your OUAC application
• Deadlines are firm
• Provide references or proofreaders enough time
to support you
• If emails are required, be professional
• If it’s optional, do it!
• Sometimes transcripts are required
▫ Provide at least 2 days notice to guidance
▫ One is complimentary, $2 each thereafter
College Applications
• Ontario Colleges Application Centre (OCAS)
▫ Login by creating your own username and
password
• Apply by February 1, 2015 for equal
consideration
▫ rolling acceptances afterwards if programs have not
filled
• Highly competitive applications start sooner
(website opens in early October)

equal consideration AND earliest release of
offers by the colleges
• May 1, 2015 – Confirm your offer of admission
• June 15, 2015– You may be required to make a
tuition deposit

Dropping Classes
• MUST remain a full time student
▫ 3 courses per semester
• Scheduled courses will not be dropped in order

• Before making commitments at a private school
please fill out the green Private School
Declaration Form from Guidance
▫ Do not assume the course will be dropped from
your timetable
• It is your responsibility to ensure that your final
private school grade is submitted to Guidance
three days prior to graduation
• We cannot submit midterm marks for private
school

• Based on grades – varies by university and college
