What is an EBITT?



An employment-based provider of initial
teacher training through the GTP – the
Graduate Teacher Programme.
Trainee teachers are employed by a
school as an unqualified teacher under
teachers terms and conditions
The programme is normally three-terms
How do I find where my nearest
provider is?


Use the TDA (Training and development
Agency) website (tp://www.tda.gov.uk/
Go to Link – routes into teaching

How are places allocated?




By the TDA – the source of funding
Allocations can vary from one year to
another
The TDA provides a salary grant to the
partnership schools
We have approximately 25 primary and
all secondary schools in the partnership
How many places are available?


Places are not known for September 2012
Currently, (2011-2012) we have been
allocated 27 primary and 49 secondary
places.
What advice would you give me?



Look at the various routes into teaching
Ensure that you are clear about the
qualifications requirement for 2012.
(Degree/GCSEs)
Gain school experience – as much as you
can, paid or voluntary so that you can be
sure that this is the career you wish to
pursue
Advice continued....



Training is demanding and time-consuming.... Is
this the right time for you to train? Consider
your personal circumstances
Don’t wait until close to the application deadline
to look for school experience
Schools may expect or require a CRB clearance
before offering you time in school
How do I apply and when is the
deadline?



The Government is setting up an online
application portal and so you will apply
electronically via this to individual EBIITs.
You will have to access the TDA site and send
the electronic form to individual providers using
the guidance posted by individual providers
You will not be able to apply to a number of
providers with just the one completed form.
Applications continued



Applications will be opened and deadlines
for completion set by individual providers
Currently we open at the start of
November (with an end of January
deadline)
This may vary – always check our website
What else can you tell me?




Completion of the three Skills tests may
well be an entry requirement rather than
an exit requirement.
These are online tests in literacy,
numeracy and ICT.
They are managed through test centres
Details awaited
How is my training supported?



All trainee teachers have to meet the Q
Standards
These are being revised for September
2012
Progress towards meeting the standards is
assessed at various points during the year,
with a final assessment.
Do I have to teach straight away?



No, your training progresses through a
number of stages, starting with school
induction.
You will work closely with your School
Based Trainer and colleagues from the
Partnership.
You will attend training seminars and
complete tasks and studies
How successful are GTP trainee
teachers?


At the end of 2010, all primary and 96 % of
secondary trainee teachers assessed at the end
of training gained employment as qualified
teachers, many in the schools that trained them.
A small number of trainee teachers withdraw
from the programme, for varied reasons. This is
typical of all ITT courses and is not particular to
one programme or another
What do the best applicants do?




Complete the application form carefully
Write a high quality letter of application
Show how they have prepared for a career
in teaching and know which phase they
wish to train in.
Have shown how they meet the person
specification
What do the best applicants do?




Have used opportunities to gain school
experience.
Gained an understanding of the expectations
placed on teachers today
Gained a broad knowledge of the school
curriculum, for either the primary or secondary
phase.
Have observed/ supported teaching to gain
knowledge of current teaching expectations and
methods.
How competitive is the
programme?
VERY!
 Whilst
it does vary from phase to
phase and from subject to
subject, there are over 6
applicants for every place
