History is doomed to
repeat itself?
Before it gets too
confusing
Look at something
old in a new way
Change your
environment for a
reason
Bring awareness
Show your point of
view
How will your viewer
interact with your
sculpture?
How will your
sculpture interact
with the viewer
What does your
sculpture stand for or
represent?
Is it fleeting?
Goldsworthy
Make your voice
heard
Expression of the
obvious can be fun
Look for the “why”
not the” how”

Charon’s Steel Styx
Passage
This sculpture, based
on the Egyptians’
travel along the river
Styx to the afterlife,
is cleverly created
with symbols of the
journey and of life on
earth, referenced
with man-made and
natural objects.
Sisyphean
Holiday
As we know from
mythology because
of a lifetime of
transgressions when
Sisyphus reached
the underworld he
was forced as
punishment to roll a
large stone up a
steep hill, only to
have it tumble back
after reaching the
top. This toil lasts all
eternity and can be
seen as a perfect
metaphor for the
creative process

Placement
This is where your
sculpture will go!
What kind of
positive statement do
you want to make?
What do you want
viewers to feel as
they enter this
establishment?
Think
Create a graphite drawing of a publicly placed sculpture that
has a statement or meaning. Create at least two sketches
depicting different views. These two sketches will be turned
in with final project.
Using the sketched images as reference, create a hand drawn,
2D rendering of a 3D sculpture idea – consider the space it
will occupy.
Consider the materials you would use to construct the
sculpture. Why and how is the material relevant? Include
reasoning in your explanation.
