Backcourt Violation
Requirements
• Team control inbounds in the frontcourt.
• That team must be the last to touch the
ball in the frontcourt.
• Must be the first team to touch the ball in
the backcourt.
The throw-in from the backcourt violation is the
closet spot near the violation.
Exceptions to Backcourt Rule
Refers to a player who gains control of the ball while airborne from his backcourt.
• During a throw in.
• During a jump-ball.
• An interception of an opponent’s pass.
• Player dribbles from backcourt to frontcourt.
– Need all three parts: both feet and the ball.
If the ball is touched by the opposing team on a throw-in,
the throw-in is legally ended. If the offensive player
takes off from the frontcourt and lands in the backcourt,
the backcourt violation has occurred.

The opportunity given a player
to score one point by an
unhindered try for goal from
within the free throw
semicircle and behind the
free throw line.
Free Throw Begins
• The ball is at the disposal of the free
thrower.
• The ball becomes live.
Free Throw Ends
• The try is successful.
• It is certain the try will not be successful.
• The try touches the floor or any player.
• The ball becomes dead.
– I.e.: Violation by the shooting team.

• Intentional Foul
• Flagrant Foul
• Attempts from offended player
– Or substitute if player not able to shoot
– Or teammate if no substitute is available
(selected by team captain or head coach)

Technical Foul
• Attempts come from any player on the
offended team.
– Eligible substitutes
– Designated starter
– Selected by the team captain or head coach
Free Throw Set Up
• Maximum of 4 defensive players and 2 offensive
players.
• Teams should properly occupy marked lane
spaces.
• Free thrower should attempt from within the free
throw semicircle and behind the free throw line.
• Lane areas from the end line up to and including
the neutral zone marks should be vacant.
• Any other player must be behind the free throw
line extended and behind the 3 point line.
Lane Spaces
• First marked lane spaces on each side of the
lane - opponents of the free thrower.
• Second marked lane spaces on each side of
the lane – teammates of the free thrower.
• Third marked lane spaces on each side of the
lane – opponents of the free thrower.
One player per lane space.
Free Throw Live Ball
• One way to get a dead ball live is to resume play
by a free throw.
• Clean exchange from official to free thrower.
• Start 10 second count.
• If a free throw for a personal foul (other than
intentional or flagrant) is unsuccessful, the ball
remains live.
• If a multi-throw for a personal foul(s) and the last
free throw is unsuccessful, the ball remains live.
Free Throws –
Dead Ball
• The ball becomes dead or remains dead…
– When it is apparent the free throw will be
successful.
– On a free throw that is to be followed by
another free throw or throw in.
– I.e.: Intentional Foul, Flagrant Foul
Bonus Free Throws
• The second free throw awarded for a common
foul.
– Not including player control/team control.
• Starts with teams 7th, 8th, 9th foul in each half.
• Awarded only if the first free throw is successful
= 1 and 1.
• Team’s 10th foul and beyond in a half = 2 free
throws.

Resumption of Play
• Free throw that is successful.
– Personal foul/shooting foul.
– Ball is put in play by a throw in.
• Technical Foul
– Ball is put in play by any player on the free thrower’s
team.
– Out of bounds at the division line opposite table.
• Intentional/Flagrant Personal Fouls
– Ball put in play by any player on the free thrower’s
team
– Out of bounds nearest the spot of the foul.

• Free throw that is unsuccessful.
– Personal/shooting foul.
– Ball remains live.
– Clock starts when the ball touches or is touched by a
player on the court.
• Following multiple throws.
– Single personal and single technical.
– Attempt in the order they occurred.
– Ball put in play by throw in at division line opposite
table.

Resumption of Play Cont.
• False Double Foul
– Any single foul.
– Any type of double or simultaneous foul.
– Play resumed with the penalty for only the
single foul.
– Just like the double or simultaneous foul had
not occurred.

• Personal Foul/Shooting Foul
– Ball dead.
– No point can be scored.
– Ball awarded to opponent for designated spot
throw in nearest the spot of the violation.
• Technical Foul
– Ball awarded to throwers team at the division
line opposite the scorers table.

– Ball awarded to throwers team.
– Designated spot throw in nearest the foul.

• If try successful
– Count goal.
– Disregard violation.

• If both offenders are in marked lane spaces, the second
violation is ignored.
• If the second violation is by the free thrower or teammate
behind the free throw line extended or 3 point line, both
violations are penalized.
• If a violation by the free thrower follows disconcertion by
an opponent, a substitute throw is awarded.
• If a fake by an opponent causes the free thrower or
teammate of the thrower to violate, only the fake is
penalized.
Goal Tending Violation
During Free Throw
• Count the point.
• Technical foul to the offending player.
• 2 free throws and the ball at the division
line opposite the table.
• If it is bonus, delay the violation because
the ball is still live.

Moving a foot or feet in any
direction in excess of the
prescribed limits while
holding the ball.

• A player who catches the ball with both
feet on the floor, may pivot using either
foot. When one foot is lifted, the other is
the pivot foot.
• A player, who catches the ball while
moving or dribbling, may stop and
establish a pivot foot.

• If both feet are off the floor and player
lands:
– Simultaneously on both feet – either foot may
be the pivot foot
– On one foot followed by the other – the first
foot to touch is pivot foot
– On one foot – the player may jump off that
foot and simultaneously land on both. Neither
foot can be pivot in this case.

• If one foot is on the floor, it is the pivot
when the other foot touches in a step. The
player may jump off that foot and
simultaneously land on both. Neither foot
can be a pivot in this case.

• After coming to a stop and establishing a
pivot foot…
– The pivot foot may be lifted, but not returned
to the floor, before the ball is released.
– If the player jumps, neither foot bay be
returned to the floor before the ball is
released. The pivot foot may not be lifted
before the ball is released to start a dribble.

– One or both feet may be lifted, but may not be
returned to the floor before the ball is

• A player holding the ball may not touch the
floor with a knee or any other part of the
body other than hand or foot after gaining
control while on the floor and touching with
other than hand or foot, a player many not
attempt to get up or stand.
