New entrants to IT
occupations
2011Research - over 550,000 new entrants into IT &Telecom professional job
roles over the next five years – an average of 110, 400 per annum
These new entrants come from:
51,200 people a year coming from occupations other IT & Telecoms industry (i.e.
experienced workers who can be retrained as IT & Telecom professionals)
18,400 people a year coming from education (predominantly graduate level and
higher)
40,800 people a year coming from other sources (e.g. Re-entering the workforce
after a career break , early retirement or unemployment).

Apprenticeships
What is an Apprenticeship:
e-skills UK was officially designated as the English Issuing Authority
Work-based training programme designed around the needs of employers, which
lead to national recognised qualifications.
The IT and Telecoms apprenticeship frameworks are designed by e-skills UK with
input from employers .
Apprenticeships combine competence based assessment with technical
qualifications.
The training for apprenticeships is funded by the Government, the training
allocation is calculated on the age profile of the candidates as follows:
Apprenticeship facts
80% of those employers who employ apprentices agree they make their
workplace more productive.
81% of consumers favour using a company which takes on apprentices.
Employers who take on a 16-18 year old apprentice only pay their salary. The
Government will fund their training.
88% of employers who employ apprentices believe that Apprenticeships lead to a
more motivated and satisfied workforce.
83% of employers who employ apprentices rely on their Apprenticeships
programme to provide the skilled workers that they need for the future.

• 35,000 individuals in small businesses have benefited from the
Business IT Guide.
• 81% of the 50,000 students involved with the BigAmbition pilot say
they’re more likely to pursue a future in technology
• We have changed girls’ attitudes to IT through computer clubs,
reaching more than 127,000 girls in over 3,700 schools
• More than 4000 people completed an IT & Telecoms apprenticeship
last year.
