What Did All That Hard Work Get Us?
► It started a productive conversation across the
industry regarding sustainability
► The growth of the Green AV SIG showed the Board
that that there was interest throughout the industry
► We developed an alliance with several other
associations to pursue sustainability
► We introduced USGBC & the EPA / ENERGY STAR
to professional AV and InfoComm

What Did We Fail to Accomplish?
► We failed to define “green AV”
► Thus, we failed to establish best practices or a
body of knowledge of how to practice “green AV”
► We were unable to get USGBC to recognize the role
that AV, videoconferencing, digital signage, or any
building technology could play in LEED…
► And after 4 meetings with them we realized that
wasn’t going to change anytime soon

So Where are We Now?
► InfoComm Board approved this program in February
► I was asked to chair a new task force in March
► Task force had first meeting in April
► What you will see today is a first public debut of the
STEP rating system framework
– It is a work in progress, a first pass
– It very much needs to be informed by the energy and ideas
of the whole industry

► Learn from LEED, but don’t copy it
► Tasks are broken out by phase & responsible party

Tenets of the
SM
STEP
Rating Program
► It is a voluntary program between InfoComm
members and their customers
► It is promoted and managed by InfoComm, but not
certified by InfoComm (day one)
– Projects would be registered on the InfoComm website
– Project postings allow for collective learning
► There is no certifying entity other than the owner
who signs off on the rating checklist with their AV
partner

SM
STEP
Advantages
► The whole AV community can participate
► We don’t have to wait on USGBC, ASHRAE,
ENERGY STAR, or anyone else
► We can create a system that appreciates the entire
sustainability life cycle

Where We Go from Here
► InfoComm will continue to work with our peer
building-technology association partners
► Meanwhile we need to continue to evolve the overall
framework, general credits, and AV specific credits
► We need all the best minds in the industry to flesh
out all of best sustainable solutions we have to offer
► Target launch of STEPSM for AV is January 2011
