Why ?
To provide formal assessment of trainees
progress annually throughout training
Protect public – ensure patient safety –links to
GMC- Good Medical Practice
How?
Panel –at least 3 members
Looks at paper evidence of training activities
Trainee not always required to be present but
majority of trainees seen in Peninsula seen face
to face
Requirements
Electronic portfolio-links training activity to
curriculum (this should have been reviewed by
educational supervisor prior to ARCP)
Evidence of NHS appraisal within past 12
months. This should be carried out by the
educational supervisor
Educational Supervisors report (on-line)
College Tutor’s report (scanned and uploaded)
Evidence of audit activity
360 degree appraisal – at least two rounds of
mini pat feedback
Workplace Based Assessments as per OP 69
ie. 3 ACEs (2 for CT1), 4 Mini-ACEs, 2 CBDs/ year. This is the minimum
requirement and the majority of trainees by far exceed this.
In addition, trainees are expected to demonstrate curriculum
psychotherapy competencies using the relevant WPBAs.
Less than full-time trainees are required to produce pro-rata evidence.
Participation in ECT, journal club, case presentations, teaching and nonclinical activities will also be assessed using relevant WPBAs eg DOPs,
AOT, DONCs etc
Enhanced Form R (requirement from 2013 for
purposes of revalidation). Trainee to complete
form prior to ARCP
Employers declaration (requirement from 2013
for purposes of revalidation). Employee to
submit to Deanery prior to ARCP
What are we looking for
Triangulated evidence of competency at level of
training and progression towards consultant practice
Evidence linked to Intended Learning Outcomes
Evidence that trainees are able to meet
competencies within required training period. eg
evidence of at least one written exam pass for
MRCpsych prior to entry into CT3/ ability to obtain
psychotherapy competencies before end of core
training
What Goes Wrong
Evidence not available ie. not included in
portfolio
Tasks not done eg. No audit project/too few
WPBAs
Poorly presented portfolio
Trainee late/not arranged cover/on holiday/acts
of God etc
Outcomes
Most trainees will obtain outcome 1 (achieving
satisfactory progress)
Trainees obtaining outcome 2 will have specific
targets identified/The core Training Programme
Director will liaise with trainer and check
progress prior to next ARCP
Trainees identified as requiring an extension to
training (outcome 3) will have specific targets
set and be offered the opportunity to meet with
senior Deanery staff to ensure that they have
appropriate support
It is expected that only in exceptional
circumstances will trainees obtain outcome 5 –
insufficient evidence submitted
Trainee Responsibilities
To be proactive in organising the e-portfolio/NHS
appraisal/workplace based assessments/
educational supervisors review and ensuring
they are freed up from clinical commitments on
days of ARCP
To ensure that all evidence is made available to
the panel at least 2 weeks before the ARCP
Deanery responsibilities
To set dates for ARCPS
Arrange selection of and Convening of panels
Chair panel discussion
Enable panel to review evidence beforehand
Support panel to make judgement about
outcomes awarded
Communicate outcomes to trainers especially
when remedial action necessary
Feedback to trainees re outcomes
Ensure process is fair and complies with
antidiscriminatory legislation etc

important milestone in the professional journey
To use the educational expertise of the panel to
provide valuable feedback to trainees and insights
into strengths and weaknesses or gaps
Mature, adult learners take ownership for their own
learning and trainees welcome the opportunity for
review
The ARCP is just part of a journey of lifetime
commitment to continuing professional
development and a process which will continue
into consultant practice
Training doctors to provide safe, effective and
compassionate care to patients is the focus of
all School of Psychiatry activities.
