“Even before turning on the monitor, we found the VG236H aesthetically
pleasing. The VG236H features a shiny, black bezel and matching stand that
would fit in any environment…For our subjective analysis, we loaded up a couple
of Blu-ray movies, sat back, and watched HD video in all its glory. The Book of
Eli looked incredible on the VG236H with scenes featuring high dynamic
range, and a few fast action fight scenes thrown into the mix. Accordingly, the
display allowed the colors to come alive with stunning clarity, and blurring
was kept to a minimum whenever the action heated up…In addition, we loaded
up several of the latest gaming titles and ran through them with NVIDIA 3D
Vision enabled. Using identical settings, we compared Acer's GD235HZ 120Hz
monitor to the VG236H and found the Asus panel produced a better 3D image
in every game we tested. Specifically, colors seemed brighter and more
vibrant, while stereoscopic 3D appears enhanced, with a greater effect. In all,
games looked fantastic across the board on the Asus monitor. Moreover, if
we had to choose between these two models, the VG236H has the upper hand
by a wide margin. Throughout testing, the VG236H did very well. In 2D mode,
it's easily one of the best looking TN panels we've tested. The colors are
vivid, images are clear, and text is sharp…Lastly, we appreciate the traditional
push buttons Asus included on this monitor and much prefer them over touchsensitive buttons…In all, we were pleased with the VG236H from Asus. It
consistently hit the mark in our testing and produces a fantastic image,
whether it be 2D, 3D, work or play. There's a very short list of 3D capable
monitors and we've now had the chance to test two of them. Without a doubt, the
VG236H is far superior to the Acer model we looked at.

“ASUS really seems to have come a long way in terms of the
build quality of their computer displays…There's a heft to the
display that makes it feel like a quality piece of
electronics…The ASUS VG236H is one of the nicest TN
monitors we've seen…Obviously, the real draw to the VG236H
is the fact that it runs at 120Hz - and the fact that it can accept
a 120Hz signal over DVI. That means that it can run 3D content
using a number of different standards…The display is fast
enough that blurring or tearing wasn't readily apparent with
standard games. Moreover, the 120Hz display modes make a
noticeable difference with even normal Windows
content…ASUS offers a lot with the VG236H. In terms of
image quality, it's easily one of the best TN-based displays
on the market today - due in no small part to excellent (for its
panel type) horizontal viewing angles. As mentioned previously,
however, the reason to buy this display is for its 120Hz
refresh rates and 2ms grey-to-grey response times…For
gamers looking to break into 3D gaming, it's hard to look further
than the VG236H.”

“Before you scream, “Who in their right mind would pay $500 for
a 23-inch twisted-nematic panel?!” know that this is a 120Hz
monitor, and that Asus is putting Nvidia’s 3D Vision kit—a $200
product—inside the box. If you’re excited about 3D gaming
and Blu-ray 3D movies…$500 is a compelling value. Oh, and
the monitor’s pretty good, too…Asus hasn’t magically avoided all
the problems we associate with TN panels…but it has done a
great job mitigating those problems. We were very
impressed, on the other hand, with the VG236H’s screen
uniformity: Many of the TN panels we’ve reviewed suffer from
blotchiness and varying degrees of intensity while displaying a
single shade across the entire display. This monitor produced
a uniform shade nearly edge to edge. Most people
contemplating a VG236H purchase will have gaming in mind,
and from that perspective, it’s a great choice—especially with
games that take advantage of Nvidia’s 3D Vision.
