What is e-safety?
E-safety relates to the education of using new technology responsibly
and safely, focusing on raising awareness of the core messages of
safe content, contact and commerce when using technology. This can
include accessing websites and online content, email, online chat
rooms, mobile phones, gaming and games consoles, social
networking sites, instant messaging (IM) and viruses and spam. …..
Risks
There are a number of key risks to using new technologies, including:
• Physical danger
• Sexual abuse
• Bullying
• Identity theft
• Illegal behaviour
• Exposure to inappropriate content
• Obsessive use of ICT
• Copyright infringements

The changing picture
‘ Having considered the evidence I believe we
need to move from a discussion about the
media 'causing' harm to one which focuses on
children and young people, what they bring to technology
and how we can use our understanding of how they develop
to empower them to manage risks and make the digital world
safer.’
Tanya Byron – Safer Children in the Digital World

of instances where images and videos were
distributed further than the intended recipient,
but only 23% believe this distribution is
intended to cause upset.
