BRIEF ON EAST WEST CORRIDOR
PROJECTS IN ASSAM
Total length in Assam
= 670 km
Starts from Silchar (km 306.25 of NH-54) and ends at
Assam/West Bengal Border (km 0 of NH-31C) Srirampur
Passes through Silchar, Maibong, Lumding, Daboka, Nagaon,
Sonapur, Guwahati, Nalbari and Bijni
Four laning completed
= 18 km (Guwahati Bypass)

Continued
• The stretch of 31 km from Balachera to Herangajo is being
widened from single lane to two lanes by the State PWD.
Clearance for Borail Wild Life and Borail Reserve forest is
awaited. Four laning would be done after completion of two
lane by PWD, Assam.
• Most of the contracts were awarded in November/December
2005.
• All the contractors had mobilized to site and works are in
progress except in 5 contract packages in NC Hills district
where the work has been stopped by the previous contractors
since April’2008 due to non-handing over of encumbrance
free site and law & order situation. All the five civil packages
of NC Hills district had been foreclosed and re-awarded.
• Entire East West Corridor is targeted for completion by March,
2013 except the five packages of NC Hills district re-awarded
for the balance work targeted for completion March, 2014.

Objectives of SARDP-NE
• Upgrade National Highways connecting State Capitals to
2/ 4 lane;
• To provide connectivity of all 88 District Headquarter
towns of NER by at least 2-lane road;
• Provide road connectivity to backward and remote areas
of NE region to boost socio - economic development;
• Improve roads of strategic importance in border area;
• Improve connectivity to neighboring countries

ISSUES REQUIRING SUPPORT OF STATE
GOVT.
• Expedite completion of Land Acquisition and utility shifting
prior to award of the project so that land is free from
encumbrance and will in turn expedite completion of the
project.
• To expedite Environment and Forest clearance wherever
necessary.
• To enhance the capacity of the State PWDs at the Division
level for effective implementation and monitoring of the
projects.
