What is IRB - And Why Does it Matter to Me??

IRB
– Institutional Review Board for the
Protection of Human Subjects in Research
 Required by Federal Law
 Responsible for reviewing research on
campus that includes human subjects
 Protection of both subjects and researcher
What Types of Research
Require IRB Approval?
 Any
research on campus that involves
human subjects
– If data are to be generated about a specific person
– If a person’s anonymity is at risk
– If a specific piece of information can be tied to an individual
IRB Approval
 NO
human research can occur without
IRB approval
– Federal mandate
– Office of Human Research Protection
 Division of Dept. of Health and Human
Services
What about class projects?

May be exempt from review if ALL 6 are true
– Surveys/interviews/observations of public behavior
directly related to topics in an official university course.
– No sensitive personal questions.
– Participants are not from a vulnerable population.
– Either

No way to link a person with the data
OR

No information is collected that could reasonably do harm
– Data are shared only with the class.
– No UW-Stout employee or student is receiving
financial compensation
How do I Obtain IRB Approval?
(4 steps)
Step1:
 Complete
the online training for
human subjects research at:
https://www2.uwstout.edu/rs/hstraining/index.htm
AND
 Fill out the UW-Stout human subjects
training certification form
IRB Approval (continued)
Step 2:
 Complete
the Protection of Human
Subjects in Research Form at:
http://www.uwstout.edu/rs/humansubjects.cfm
 Submit to Research

– 152 Voc Rehab (Office)
IRB Approval (continued)
Step 3:
Wait for IRB review
The IRB will review your form in
one of two ways:
Expedited review
Full review
IRB Approval (continued)
Step 4:
Notification of review will be sent by email to
researcher (and advisor if a student)
If Not Approved:
If Approved:


Recommendations
will be made for
revision and
resubmission
You may begin your
research project
You cannot start your research until your project has
been approved!
