E-Book Lending at the Spanish Libraries

MISSION
The project E-Book Lending at the Spanish Libraries
aims to take the new formats of digital media into
the Spanish public libraries. Set up by the Ministry
of Education, Culture and Sport, is based on the
cooperation with the different autonomous regions
that will manage the platform and the digital
content available for lending.
STARTING POINT
26th June 2013 – Meeting for discussing the problems and opportunities of
e-books lending:
25 representatives of the sectors involved: public libraries, publishers,
distributors, booksellers and other experts, and library professionals from
Ministry and the Autonomous Communities and other public administrations
At the same the Ministry announced a call for tenders to create the platform
and acquire a set of licenses

The e-lending project consists in an online
platform that will give access to the e-books and
will be managed independently by each one of
the 17 Autonomous Communities and the 2
Autonomous Cities (Ceuta and Melilla).
Autonomous Communities (2/3)
It’s an Open project:
• The interfaz of this platform is flexible so can adapt to the 19
different web pages that will provide access to the e-books
• It’s been translated to all of the official languages.
• A basic set of books will be offered but the Communities can add
more titles to it.

A Working Group on E-Book at the Public Libraries Commission
in the frame of the Council for Library Cooperation will be
created where members of each Autonomous Communities and
Cities will have their representatives. This Commission will have
the responsibility of monitoring and enhancing the platform
The platform eBiblio
The e-lending platform allows users:
-Browsing
the
collection
(lists
of
recommendations, novelties, etc.)
- Searching books by tags (ISBN, title, author,
etc.)
- The user´s account allows to manage the
electronic devices associated
The platform Ebiblio. Lending
Once the users have found a book they can get
more detailed information, by clicking the ebook
cover or title.
They can see the availability of the document:
Available, reserved, not available
The users can request to the library new titles
(desideratas)

- Streaming
-Cloud reading through apps for IOS and
Android with DRM
-Personal computers and e-readers
The platform Ebiblio. Backoffice
-2 levels of administration:
- Librarian: to manage the lending service
- Administrator: to manage the lending service, the
acquisition of licenses, and content edition
The platform Ebiblio. Statistics
- Qlikview is the tool used for statistics to obtain
figures about:
- General (nº of users, lendings, reserves, of
licenses, etc.)
- Users (collections, subjects, languages, publishers,
formats, etc.)
- Lendings (renewals, reservations and, returns)
- Licenses management
License acquisition and distribution
The Ministry has acquired 180.000 licenses of 1.400 titles in 3
formats: epub, pdf, and mp3 (audiobooks)
The criteria for distributing these contents among all the
Autonomous Communities is strictly demographic, based on
2013 figures.
Timeline
February – June 2014  Adaptation of the platform (language,
corporate image, domain, etc.) to the web pages of the different
Autonomous Communities and Cities. Including their Apps.
 Connection of the local library systems with the platform
