(1) Example of the first paragraph of the Essay
•What is a political machine? A political machine is a group of people that
controls a political party. We saw a stereotype one in the video where Jim
Taylor had Governor Hopper doing things for one person and not always
listening to others. He did listen to his boys at the table about who to
send to Washington. He kind of left it to chance with the coin toss
landing on the paper with his name on the front page of it.
•How does a political machine work? In the video the political boss or
leader of the machine was Jim Taylor. He was a powerful newspaper guy
in some state and used others to get what he wanted. He used Senator
Paine by pressuring him in to thinking he could be the next president of
the U.S. if he followed what Taylor said even when he did not like it.
Like when he said he would not do it anymore yet did when Taylor made
him think he would not help him anymore and told him to go back home.
•What were some actions the machine took to expose Senator Smith as a
fraud? The actions the machine took to expose Senator Smith as a fraud
were headlines saying he was using the boy’s money for his own and he
owned the land and would make money from its sale. When the boy
rangers printed their own facts they were injured and stopped by Jim
Taylor’s guys.
•Who is the leader of the machine in the movie and who is the politician of
the machine?
