Annex IV: Regulations for the prevention of
pollution by sewage from ships
Regulation 1
Definitions
Sewage means:
1. Drainage and other wastes from any form of toilets and urinals
2. Drainage from medical premises (dispensary, sick bay, etc.) via
wash basins, wash tubs and scuppers located in such premises
3. Drainage from spaces containing living animals
4. Other waste waters when mixed with the drainages defined
above

Regulation 2: Annex IV is applicable for
Ships in international voyage ≥ 400 gt,
and
all ships in international voyage certified for > 15 persons

Regulation 4: Surveys
The following surveys shall be carried out:
INITIAL SURVEY before the first certificate is issued for the ship.
A complete survey of structure, equipment, systems,
fittings and material to ensure full compliance with
applicable requirements
RENEWAL SURVEY at an interval of five years.

ADDITIONAL SURVEY general or partial, after repair or renewals are
made, to ensure that the repairs or renewals have
been effectively made and that materials and
workmanship are in all respects satisfactory and that
the ship complies with the applicable requirements

Sewage systems
Regulation 9
.1 Sewage treatment plant which shall be of a type approved by
the Administration
.2 Sewage comminuting and disinfecting system approved by the
Administration. Such system shall be fitted with facilities to
the satisfaction of the Administration, for the temporary
storage of sewage when the ship is less than 3 nautical miles
from the nearest land
.3 Holding tank of the capacity to the satisfaction of the
Administration for the retention of all sewage, having regard
to the operation of the ship, the number of persons on board
and other relevant factors. The holding tank shall be
constructed to the satisfaction of the Administration and shall.
have a means to indicate visually the amount of its contents.

It should be noted that the values presented here will vary
significantly depending on the actual volume of toilet flush water
used. A small leak in a conventional flashometer valve could increase
the volume of sewage by a factor of ten, whereas the use of a reduced
volume flush system could conversely reduce the sewage volume by a
factor of ten.

OBLIGATIONS FOR THE
MARITIME ADMINISTRATION
Chapter 4, Regulation 12 - Reception facilities
1. The Government, which requires ships operating in waters
under its jurisdiction to comply with the discharge regulation
11.1, undertakes to ensure the provision of facilities at ports
and terminals of the reception of sewage, without causing
delay to ships, adequate to meet the needs of the ships using
them.
2. The Government shall notify IMO, for transmission to the
Contracting Governments concerned, of all cases where the
facilities provided under this regulation are alleged to be
inadequate.
