Welcome!
Induction week information for Year 6 students
ROLE OF TUTOR
Your tutor is the1st point of contact they will:
• Monitor attendance & punctuality and
progress, receive and distribute notes /
phone calls / letters to parents from school.
• Provide general information.
• Explain the rewards system and positive
emails from SIMS.
SCHOOL DAY
Please drop & collect outside the school site

On site by 8.25am please. Breakfast available from 8.00am
At tutor room for first bell at 8.35am.
Seated ready for morning registration at 8.40am.
First break – food available – 10.55am.
Second break – food available – 1.20pm.
Afternoon registration is at 2.50pm and school finishes at
3.00pm.
• If your child is entitled to free school meals, their money will
be added to their WisePay account daily and can be used at
either break.
• STAYING HYDRATED
• We encourage students to drink water in most
lessons other than ICT, Technology and Science.
• There are 2 breaks when food and drink may be
purchased and eaten.
• Breakfast is available between 8.00 and 8.30am
• Please do NOT send fizzy or ‘sports’ drinks into
school.
• Chewing gum is not permitted in school.
UNIFORM
For induction week only:
• NO PRIMARY SCHOOL BADGED ITEMS TO BE WORN PLEASE, YOU ARE
WILLIAM EDWARDS STUDENTS NEXT WEEK. You will need:

School Tie: with school badge available here tonight or from Sue’s Schoolwear.
School shirt: plain, opaque white cotton or cotton/polyester, long or short
sleeved, to be worn with a tie so no revere collars, no polo shirts.
School trousers: plain black (or grey if primary uniform trousers being worn),
business-style trousers, full length; no shorts, no denim, corduroy, brushed
cotton, stretch material, chinos or ‘jeans style’. Worn with black or dark blue
socks.
School skirts: black or grey to be worn with opaque black tights only, no socks.
Shoes: Black, conventional style, without heels and with black laces. No designer
or trainer-style shoes to be worn, no Timberland boots or shoes. No shoes with
logos. Plain Kickers acceptable.
Primary P.E. kit acceptable this week bring it on MONDAY, just in case!

UNIFORM
JEWELLERY
• Earrings, piercings of any kind, rings and
bracelets are not to be worn for Health and
Safety reasons.
• Watches are permitted, but must be removed
for P.E.
MAKE UP
• Subtle please.
If it is noticeable;
it is too much.
HAIRSTYLES
• No extreme hairstyles - no shaved-in patterns/ lines
and clipped hair no shorter than No. 2.
• Natural hair colours only.
• No hair adornments.
• Hair bands to be plain and discreet.
MOBILE PHONES
• Mobile phones are not to be used during the school day,
they should be turned off and kept in a bag or pocket. All
emergency contact with students must take place via the
school office.
• If students are found using their phone, other than as part of
a planned lesson activity, they will be asked to put it away. If
there is a further incident, it will be confiscated, sent up to
the main office for safe-keeping and a parent will need to
come to school to collect it.
• We cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to
phones or other electronic devices that are brought into
school.
SCHOOL EQUIPMENT &
SCHOOL BAGS
• William Edwards journal - for recording homework
and as a convenient means of communication
between school and home. Must be brought to
school every day. Please check regularly for
messages and homework.
• Needed EVERY day: pens - black, pencils, ruler,
calculator.
• Sensible bag of appropriate size to carry all school
books and equipment, at least A4 size.
• Separate P.E. bag.
DETENTIONS
• Students can be detained after school for up
to 20 minutes without prior notification.
However, we will always endeavour to
contact parents if a student is going to be
detained for more than 10 minutes.
• Formal detentions are recorded in the
student journal.
SUPPORT & MENTORING
• During tutor time, students are grouped and seated in a ‘family’ which
includes members of all year groups.
• Each new pupil is assigned a Mentor from their tutor group who is
available to provide daily support and guidance.
• PALS: a whole school initiative with trained students who are available
to offer support, guidance and a listening ear.
• Pastoral Support Staff: are available to deal with any serious, complex or
ongoing issues.
• Mrs Taylor is Pastoral Manager for Bruyn and Rokell Houses.
• Mrs Heighway is Pastoral Manager for Warren and Whitmore Houses.
• Mrs Meek who you may recognise from Primary School, is the Family
Support Worker and is here to help with your transition to William Edwards.
TRACKING
• Each child’s progress is monitored and their performance
reviewed at least once per term by their Tutor.
• The aim is for each child to be aware of their attainment and
effort in all subjects.
• We aim for students to be able to identify their own
strengths and weaknesses and take the necessary steps to
achieve at the best level they can.
• Working groups are also reviewed each half-term. They are
fluid and students will be moved between working groups,
so that they are in the most appropriate group to meet their
current needs and progress.
