The 5th Edition of the International Singing Competition

“SIMONE ALAIMO - Il Bel Canto “

Article 1 – Introduction

The competition will take place in Linguaglossa (CT) 4 to 6 May 2017 at the Casa San Tommaso located in Piazza Ambrogio Gullo, and will take place within the

of all nationalities and regardless of age and is divided into two sections:

A) COMPETITION FOR CLASSIFICATION AND AWARDS B) COMPETITION FOR ROLES

Participants may enroll in one or both sections; the commission has the right to award prizes in both sections, under art. 7 of this Regulation, even for a single resulting winning candidate, as long as it is registered in both sections of the competition.

The candidate who applies to the B secion will have right to compete for both operas (Art. 2) and must demonstrate to manage by heart the entire role or entire selected roles, with the exception of recitatives from "La Cenerentola ".

Both operas will be produced as part of the

3rd EtnaOpera Festival "Simone Alaimo-Il BelCanto

which also for this year will take place at the picturesque Colonnato dei Domenicani di Linguaglossa. Production activities will begin July 20, 2017 and will end on August 6. All winners for roles, both primary and secondary ones, will be rewarded with the debut of role / roles and will remain, guested by the Festival for room and complete board, in Linguaglossa for rehearsals and direction during the whole period. The works will be staged on 29 and 30 July and on 5 and 6 August.

The Festival will invite artistic directors and managers in order to promote the visibility of the artists who will participate.

The works will be carried out with the collaboration of the orchestra, choir and scenery of Taormina Opera Stars, festival with which the competition is in partnership for current edition.

Art. 2

–

Application rules and guidelines

Application for the competition can be made by

completing the online form at

www.etnaoperafestival.it/concorsosimonealaimo ,

no later than 20th April 2017.

The candidate must specify the time of application, as indicated by the module, to which section of the competition intends to enroll;

if the applicant wishes to enroll in both sections he will then fill both the boxes for the sections.

The candidate applying to the B section of the competition will have to indicate, at the time of submission of the application, the role for which it competes by checking the box related to the chosen role. The candidate who intends to compete for both works will check all the boxes corresponding to the selected roles.

Attached to the application form each competitor will have to upload the files, in the appropriate section, of following documents:

- Two recent photos in jpg format. - Curriculum vitae - Copy of a valid ID (identity card, passport), in jpg or pdf format

For candidates who wish to enroll in both sections of the competition entry fee is Eur 90,00 (ninety, 00) in total.

Art. 4 –

Convocation

All competitors are invited to arrive at 10 am on May 4th 2017, at Casa San Tommaso ,located in Piazza Ambrogio Gullo ( Linguaglossa ), to participate to drawing of the letter that will decide the turn of listening. Those who will choose, as far as it concerns accommodation, our agreement with Casa San Tommaso will find directly on the place of activities. The preliminary stage of the competition will start at 10.30 am.

The members of the Committee representing the "Robert Gilder international artist management," the "MC Domani Artist Management" and the agency "L’Opera" will be entitled, at its discretion, to identify possible candidates to be included in the activities of their agencies.

Art. 6 –

Structure and articulation of competition

Section A - Competition for classification and prizes –

All applicants will bring in competition n. 5 arias of their own free choice, without limits of style or language. Performance by heart is compulsory.

Section B - Competition for roles –

All applicants will bring in competition n. 3 arias by their own free choice, without limits of style or language; applicants will also bring the whole selected role/roles ( except Recitativi for La Cenerentola ) For those who participate in both sections, A and B, the 3 arias can be chosen among those indicated for section A. Performance by heart is compulsory. Competition is articulated as follows;

A) PRELIMINARY ROUND Section A - Competition for classification and prizes

- Candidate will bring

an aria

, at his own choice, among those listed by the participant. - The commission will have the right to choose, among those listed by the participant,

another aria to be performed.

The panel reserves the right to stop listening at any time.

Section B - Competition for roles

- The Candidate will perform

an aria

an aria

(without recitatives as regards the competing candidates for “ La Cenerentola “

) taken from the chosen role

if the role does not include solo arias, the Commission will choose, for listening, sections of the Opera considered to be appropriate to listen to the selected role

. - For Candidates participating for multiple roles

A) SEMIFINAL ROUND

To the second round will be admitted the candidates reporting the judgment of suitability on the majority criteria.

Section A - Competition for classification and prizes

B) FINAL ROUND

To the Final round will be admitted the candidates reporting the judgment of suitability on the majority criteria. The final vote will be calculated on the arithmetic average of all individual votes, excluding the highest and the lowest.

Section A - Competition for classification and prizes

- Panel will choose for listening

one or more pieces chosen from those indicated by the participant, even if already performed.

The panel reserves the right to stop listening at any time.

Section B - Competition for roles

- The commission will choose, for a further listening,

one or more section, both solo and ensemble ones, from the role chosen by the participant.

Any ensemble section will be chosen based on the participants admitted to this stage of the competition. - For Candidates participating for multiple roles

, the Commission shall have the right to replicate listening for all chosen roles

.

To participants will be made available an accompanist. Participants have the right to be accompanied by a pianist of their own choice, at their own expense, except for the final Gala Concert of Winners. All the winners MUST participate to the Gala Concert to be held at the auditorium of the Casa San Tommaso on the evening of May 6, 2017. All winners will be hosted at Festival's charge (room and full board) for the night of May 6. The Panel reserves the right not to award all prizes or divide them among the candidates with an ex-aequo criteria. For all rounds the decisions of the panel are final.

will be a member of the Panel of this Competition and will have right to identify,

among the finalists

, any competitors to whom assign one or more roles from those of the operas for 2017 edition of the Festival. The works produced by the Festival in 2017 will be

"Turandot" by G. Puccini, "Aida" by Verdi, "Tosca" by Puccini and "Cavalleria Rusticana" by P. Mascagni

and will all be performed at Taormina Ancient Theater.

The President of Taormina Opera Stars also reserves the right to award more Prizes "Opera Stars Taormina – CONCERT Section", in addition to that provided for the 1st Prize in Section A of this competition, in case ther would be, among finalists, more candidates deemed suitable.

To all participants will be given a certificate of participation at the Competition.
