Last year, the winter came late, spoiling us with a extra warmth for the season. This year, the cold has
made up for lost time, as snow and fog engulfs the hills. It has been a reflective and tumultuous start to
the year for many, and now we turn our thoughts toward the coming Spring, and what new worlds may
begin to bloom. February in Florence sees the event season building back up, with Carnevale celebrations
all over Tuscany (don’t miss the biggest in ViaReggio), or the contemplation inspired by Ash Wednesday
and the beginning of Lent. We hope you enjoy the last of winter and all it has to offer, with best wishes

BEST EVENT FOR FEBRUARY: BLACK HISTORY MONTH FLORENCE
Throughout February
Now in its second year, Black History Month Florence is a cross-institutional, multivenue, pluriform
exploration of the African diaspora, its history, and its impact on contemporary Florence. BHMF is
broken down into talks, tours, kids, art, theatre/dance, music, food, film, and workshops. The project
consists of a range of lectures, film projections, book readings, art exhibitions, food events, concerts, and
performances that seek to link a broad network of spaces dedicated to cultural production throughout
Florence and the broader community of African diasporic peoples local to Florence and beyond. The
program seeks to celebrate the cultural contributions of the diaspora that has permanently impacted Italian
culture in numerous ways.

BEST EXHIBITION FOR FEBRUARY: THE KLIMT EXPERIENCE

Santo Stefano al Ponte presents Klimt Experience, a new production by the Crossmedia Group. Klimt’s
figures and landscapes are the protagonists of this new, interactive, immersive exhibition dedicated to the
founding father of the Vienna Secession. Works such as The Kiss, The Tree of Life, or Judith have

become a part of popular culture, but Klimt is still an artist to be discovered and recounted. This is the
aim of this exhibition project, to thrill, fascinate, and amaze visitors young and old, inviting them to
become better acquainted with the man and the artist, to understand his works, and to learn to interpret his
style thanks to the spectacular display of details and his pictorial technique. Klimt Experience proposes a
total immersion on the Viennese artist’s world. The soundtrack played by a state-of-the-art Dolby
surround system, the extraordinary evocative power of the 700 selected images, and the 3D
reconstructions of early 20th Century Vienna will produce unique emotions in the visitors.

BEST FESTIVAL FOR FEBRUARY: NEW LITERARY FESTIVAL FIRENZE LIBRO APERTO

From The Florentine: “The city writes a new chapter with the first edition of Firenze Libro Aperto, a new
festival dedicated to the publishing world and its protagonists. More than 100 publishing houses will
gather in the Spadolini pavilion for three days of book and magazine presentations, round tables tackling
timely political and social issues and meetings with authors. Among the international guests in the lineup
are American pulp author Joe Lansdale, best known for his suspense novels, and Moroccan writer and
poet Tahar Ben Jelloun, winner of the International Dublin Literary Award for Cette aveuglante absence

Researchers have found that regular consumption of chocolate, dark and rich with cacao, can reduce the
risk of cardiovascular disease by 37%, diabetes by 31% and stroke by 29%. So the annual chocolate fair
and market is not only delicious, but an act of good health! From Friday, February 10 to 19th, Piazza
Santa Maria Novella will host the 13th edition of La Fiera del Cioccolato Artigianale, Florence's annual
Chocolate Fair. Mountains of chocolate truffles, cascading chocolate fountains, luscious chocolate
liqueurs or giant slabs of chocolate spiked with fruits and nuts, are only a small part of the event. The
products of artisan chocolatiers are a feast for the eyes, a gift for the nose and a treat for the taste buds.
This year the fair includes pastry and chocolate making workshops for children, as well as chocolate
tastings and workshops for the adults. A tasting session pairing chocolate and grappa is again on offer this
year. The opening will be celebrated with a parade of Flag Wavers, musicians, and Costumed Renaissance
figures in Piazza Santissima Anninziata on Saturday February 11th at 15.30.

FLORENCE HONOURS ANNA MARIA LUISA DE MEDICI

February 18 celebrates the greatest patroness of the arts in Florence history, Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici,
the creator of The Family Pact. She was the last of the ruling line of the Medici family, as she and her
brothers failed to produce any heirs before their deaths. However, she left behind an extraordinary legacy
in the form of The Family Pact, which bequeathed the considerable artistic patrimony of the Medici
family, accrued over three centuries, to the city of Florence. The condition stipulated within the Pact was
to prevent any of the patrimony from being removed from Florence or the state of Tuscany. Instead, she
insisted, everything must remain on display in Florence, for all time, “for the use of the public and to
attract the curiosity of foreigners.” It is she that we have to thank for the vast majority of treasures that
make Florence the artistic mecca that it is today.
In honour of Anna Maria Luisa, Florence opens its Civic Museums with free entry for the public on the
day of her death, February 18. Be sure to include a visit to the Medici Chapels to pay your respects.

The monographic exhibition with works from Giovanni dal Ponte (1385-1437), protagonist for the late
Gothic Humanism. A Florentine artist with his own particular language for the late gothic period will
feature a new canvas, the "Madonna and Child Enthroned". The work, which will be on display along
with other paintings of the Tuscan painter from November 22 to the Accademia Gallery in Florence,
comes from the deposits of various Museums from the Tuscan region.

TRA ARTE E MODA, ACROSS ART AND FASHION AT MUSEUM SALVATORE

Is fashion art?
A simple question conceals the complex universe of an articulated relationship that has long been
investigated, but without arriving at a clear and unequivocal definition. This project analyses the forms of
dialogue between these two worlds: reciprocal inspirations, overlaps and collaborations, from the
experiences of the Pre-Raphaelites to those of Futurism, and from Surrealism to Radical Fashion.
The exhibition itinerary focuses on the work of Salvatore Ferragamo, who was fascinated and inspired by
the avant-garde art movements of the 20th century, on several ateliers of the Fifties and Sixties that were
venues for studies and encounters, and on the advent of the culture of celebrities. It then examines the
experimentation of the Nineties and goes on to ponder whether in the contemporary cultural industry we
can still talk about two separate worlds or if we are instead dealing with a fluid interplay of roles.
The distinctive aspect of the exhibition layout lies in the collaboration with other cultural institutions,
which took an active part in implementing this concept with the aim of inspiring joint reflection: in
addition to the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo, promotor and organiser of the project together with the
Fondazione Ferragamo, in Florence the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, the Gallerie degli Uffizi (the
Galleria d’arte moderna di Palazzo Pitti and the Galleria del Costume), the Museo Marino Marini, and in
Prato the Museo del Tessuto.

This talk by Prof Henry of McGill University explores the key visual role of Carnival within aristocratic
leisure and courtship culture in Lorenzo’s Florence. Carnivalesque iconography includes Morris dancing,
face-pulling, Bacchic figures of excess and sensual pleasure, and playful although often violent themes on
the power of women and love.

EVENTS AT MUSEO NOVECENTO: FLORENCE’S CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM
The Museo Novecento is dedicated to the Italian art of the 20th Century, and offers a selection of around
300 works which are located across 15 exhibition areas, along with a study room, a cabinet of drawings
and prints, and a room for conferences and projections. The museum is located in the ancient Spedale of
the Leopoldine in Santa Maria Novella square.

From The Florentine: “Broaden your cinematic horizons at the Balkan Florence Express film festival,
organized by Oxfam and the Fondazione Sistema Toscana and showcasing 19 movies from Serbia,
Slovenia, Bosnia, Croatia, Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo and beyond. The opener will be Dobra Žena
(Good Wife), which chronicles the story of a married woman who stumbles on a secret from her
husband’s past (February 23, 8.30pm). Star Mirijana Karanović will be present. Other highlights will be
the most recent film from Oscar winner Danis Tanović, Smrt u Sarajevu (Death in Sarajevo, February 25)
and a book presentation put on by Ciclica, featuring Gigi Riva (February 24, 4pm), vice director of
L’Espresso and author of L'ultimo rigore di Faruk: Una storia di calcio e di guerra.”

The stunning Odeon Cinema was opened in 1922, built into the interior of Renaissance treasure, Palazzo
Strozzino. The original palazzo design was by Filippo Brunelleschi, and this is one of the most beautiful
cinemas you will ever find in the world. The Odeon hosts a long-running program of Original Language
films throughout the year. This month’s English language films include: La La Land and A United

DANCE AND THEATRE FOR FEBRUARY
SHOWS AT TEATRO VERDI
The ‘Teatro Pagliano’, which assumed its current name, ‘Teatro Verdi,’ in 1901, was built during the
Grand Ducal period in Florence on the former site of the fourteenth century Stinche Prison. During the
nineteenth century, Florence – which was also the capital of Italy - witnessed the construction of many
theaters. The Teatro Verdi is the only one still in operation, having lived through a century and a half of
history and tremendous change. For Florence and the whole Tuscan region, this theater represents the
focal point for special events and occasions, musical events, and popular performances. The Teatro Verdi
was the dream project of Girolamo Pagliano. Pagliano was a former baritone and successful pharmacist
who invented an elixir for long life. One of the seven largest theaters in Italy, its importance was clear
from its inauguration on September 10th 1854. Viscardello, the original title of Verdi’s Rigoletto, was the
theater’s inaugural performance. The tradition continues today, with a full program of events and concerts
at the stunning venue.

THEATRE AT TEATRO DELLA PERGOLA
The Teatro della Pergola is a historic opera house in Florence, Italy. It is located in the centre of the city
on Via della Pergola, from which the theatre takes its name. It was built in 1656 under the patronage of
Cardinal Gian Carlo de' Medici to designs by the architect Ferdinando Tacca, son of the sculptor Pietro
Tacca. The inaugural production was the opera buffa, Il potestà di Colognole by Jacopo Melani. The
opera house, the first to be built with superposed tiers of boxes rather than raked semi-circular seating in
the Roman fashion, is considered to be the oldest in Italy, having occupied the same site for more than
350 years. It has two auditoria, the Sala Grande, with 1,500 seats, and the Saloncino, a former ballroom
located upstairs which has been used as a recital hall since 1804 and which seats 400.

VOLAREARTE IN PISA: PARK EUN SUN SCULPTURES AT PISA AIRPORT
Until June 15
Well into the third edition of this initiative by the Henraux Foundation together with the Tuscany Airports,
you will find a collection of 9 sculptures from Park Eun Sun gracing the Pisa airport.
This renowned Korean artist, a long time resident of Versilia, arrived in Italy to satisfy his desire to work
with Apuane marbles. His artwork, known on an international level, is remarkable for the pure geometric
forms composed of bi-color slabs of marble.

is an integral part of a mystical wooded area.
There are three distinctive characteristics of the Park: integration of art and nature; diversity of cultures,
represented by artists from all over the world; and a variety of materials. Each artist has been invited to
visit the wood in order to choose a location and subsequently submit a site-specific proposal. This
accounts for the harmony of the sculptures with the trees, the sounds, the colours, the light, and other
elements of the wood. In fact, these man-made works do not extend beyond the limits of nature; rather,
they integrate with it and enhance it. Inside the Park an Amphitheatre has also been created to offer
visitors a rich program of concerts and cultural events.
The Chianti Sculpture Park is an indispensable stop not only for art lovers, but also for anyone who
wishes to experience the delights of a walk through nature while admiring fascinating works of art. The
visit is suitable for persons of every age on foot along a walking path of 1 km, but is also accessible with
a child’s pushchair or a wheelchair.

The Viareggio Carnival started in 1873 when a number of local aristocrats decided to organize an
extravagant parade on Shrove Tuesday (martedì grasso), before the 40-day austerity of Lent. The five
masked parades through the seaside town will each have their own set of papier-mâché floats and
puppets, which will parade along the famous viali a mare, down the seaside promenades, offering a wide
program of entertainment and fun for children and adults. Bands and other performance groups come
from all over the world to participate. At least 800,000 visitors enjoy the Viareggio Carnival each year.
The floats are the true crowd-pleasers. They take an entire year to construct. The biggest, over 20 meters
high and weighing 40 tons, will carry about 200 people in costume who dance and throw confetti and
candies. Other people will be inside the floats to manoeuvre the weights, the counter-weights and levers
that make the puppets move. The paper maché puppets satirise public and political figures, depict social
issues, as well as fairy-tale heroes. Noteworthy, is the program of related events including a large number
of shows and cultural activities such as musical comedies in vernacular, a series of carnival menus
available in the restaurants, festivals in the various neighbourhoods, as well as numerous masked balls
held in the most fashionable discotheques and ballrooms.

BENVENUTO BRUNELLO: WELCOME BRUNELLO IN MONTALCINO (SIENA)
February 17-20
Every year in February the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino organises an event called
“BENVENUTO BRUNELLO”. On this occasion the new wines on the market since the beginning or the
new year are presented to the press and the stars assigned to the new vintage are announced. On the same
occasion a commemorative tile is placed on the walls of the old Town Hall and the Leccio d’Oro Prize is
awarded. Two days are dedicated to the presenting of the new wines on the market to the operators in the
sector. While the official tastings are limited to press and buyers, the entire town comes to life with extra
events included for the public.

SESTO FIORENTINO CARNEVALE
February 2
The municipality of Sesto Fiorentino offers perhaps the closest carnival celebration to Florence. The
theme of Pinnochio will be celebrated with workshops, parades, and special events for children. The
parades will be accompanied by music from the local municipal band and a number of stands will line the
streets, offering traditional carnival sweets, including cenci (fried and sugared dough), schiacciata alla
fiorentina (citrus sponge cake), and fritelle di riso (flavoured rice cakes).

FOIANO DELLA CHIANA (AREZZO) CARNEVALE
February 5, 12, 19, 26, and March 5
The small agricultural town of Foiano della Chiana boasts one of the most varied carnivals, tracing its
origins back to 1539. The four districts of the town compete for the best float prize, and spectators of the
parades traditionally throw fruit and vegetables at the people on the floats. The protagonist of this
Carnival is King Giocondo, whose straw effigy is burnt every year in the main square after the traditional
reading of the deeds and misdeeds to signal the end of winter. This year, the burning of King Giocondo
will take place on March 5 at 19.00.

BIBBIENA IN THE VALLEY OF CASENTINO: CARNEVALE DI MEA
To get off the proverbial ‘beaten path’ and witness some serious local pride, head to Bibbiena, the largest
town in the valley of Casentino, for the Carnival of Mea. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Bibbiena became
central to a regional Guelph–Ghibelline power struggle. To express disdain for their Florentine enemies,
Bibbiena residents organised fabulous feasts, festivals and dances. Contemporary locals continue to honor
this part of their history with parades on Shrove Tuesday. Adding to the local flair, the eldest resident of
Bibbiena’s Fondaccini district traditionally lights a fire to kick off the evening festivities, which include

CARNEVALE SULLE DUE RIVE, VINCI
February 12, 19, 26, and March 5
Hosted in the municipality of Vinci, birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, the Carnevale sulle Due Rive
celebrates three days of parades. The floats are particularly well done, built with the active participation
of carpenters, electricians, and many local artisans to provide their time and talents to the realisation of
the carnival. The floats are particularly large and children and adults are welcome to climb aboard! On
Shrove Tuesday the parade takes place at night, ending on the banks of the Arno for the Bonfire of the
King, followed by a fireworks display. Also a part of the carnival is a market of local foods.

MUGELLANO CARNEVALE

In Piazza Dante of Borgo San Lorenzo, the Mugellano Carnival traces its origins back to Medicean
Tuscany and the sixteenth century. Amongst the masks and floats, confetti and streamers, entertainment
for all will be offered from 14.30 on both Sundays. The parades begin at 15.00. This years floats will
include Ice Age, the Minions, the Barcone Pirates, Indians, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, Disco
“Teen Club”, trains, boats, and the Galleon which will be operated by the staff of the Carnival. Traditional
music and market stands add to the Carnival atmosphere.

PIOMBINO CARNEVALE
23-28 February
Have a flair for the dramatic? You’ll feel right at home at Piombino’s carnival celebrations. In addition to
offering the standard seasonal parades and parties, Piombino has a festival mascot: a giant papier-mâché
mask called ‘Cicciolo,’ which is ceremoniously burned at the end of the carnival in front of thousands of
onlookers. Before the mask-burning extravaganza, head to one of the many food and wine stands to
sample local specialties from the Costa degli Etruschi and Val di Cornia wine trails.
