Intentions on Internationalisation:
2017 - 2020
The University of Groningen is a world-class
international research university with strong
roots in the North of the Netherlands. As a global
institution, we reach out into the world – and
welcome it to Groningen.
With an academic tradition dating back to 1614,
the University of Groningen is a diverse and richly talented academic community, globally prominent in innovative education and research. As an
early adopter of internationally-focused policies,
we are deeply engaged in the Internationalisation process and well-positioned to continue our
recognized leadership in this space.
Our graduates take their place in the world as
global citizens, and innovators of the future. A
future that is open to the world, tolerant and
diverse. International experience (both at home
and abroad) and an innovative, entrepreneurial
mind-set are essential in that, alongside academic focus and tradition, and fit-for-purpose
learning outcomes.
rative research continue to rise, and our international campus in Yantai, China will increase
the global reach of our academic programmes
and ideals.
At home; we are focused on the internationalisation of the classroom, integration within our
student population, the opportunities provided
by these future learning communities and the
global challenges we, and our students, face.
These are our intentions for internationalisation; we state them with the aim to engage our
university colleagues and community, along
with our global network, and that they serve as
a guide for the years ahead.
Board of the University
This paper outlines our approach to internationalisation; from the pioneering phase, where
the University of Groningen has had so much
success, to a deeper strategic and more embedded approach which is required to build on our
leadership in this area.
Our excellent work in the previous decade has
given us an extensive range of English-taught
programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as a growing proportion of
international students (17%), PhD candidates
(60%) and increasing numbers of international
academic and professional staff.
Our connections to partners and industries
around the world are many and varied; we remain firmly ranked in the top 100; the number
of our students going abroad for part of their
programme and our relationships in collabo-
