Diagnostische Tussentijdse
Toets (DTT)
The DTT (Diagnostische Tussentijdse Toets) is a computer-based, adaptive
test aimed at diagnosing a student’s reading and writing skills, using a
student model as a framework. During our workshop we will explore the
different skills which are required in reading and develop sample questions
that are aimed at testing specific parts of reading.

Most 18-25 year-olds in the UK voted to remain in Europe. Most 18-25
year-olds in the USA voted for Clinton. (As did teachers in both countries.)
Big Wheel Theatre Company has worked for 32 years in schools
throughout Europe. This interactive seminar presents drama-based
responses to post-Brexit/Trump teaching, and invites you to share your
own ideas.
In this talk I will share my vision of a possible future for EFL literature
teaching. We will discuss several EFL literature lesson and curricula that
allow students to critically interact with literary works, develop their
English language skills, and develop their position in life as knowledgeable
global citizens in the 21st century.

Dick Whittington Panto
In explaining the importance of reading novels, teachers often say, that
‘reading novels can teach you to put yourself into someone else’s shoes’.
Empathy seems to be a self-evident 21st century skill. Do poems play a
similar role? This presentation concentrates on the less studied
relationship between poetry and empathy.
Dick Whittington is a highly interactive play, suitable for students learning
languages. It brings the British culture wholeheartedly to the piece. It is a
fun and engaging piece of theatre performed by British professional actors.
This is one of the plays we offer each year for schools.

Novellist: a website to help
readers of books in English
Formative assessment helpt leerlingen om bewust te worden van eigen
doelen en voortgang, en om feedback te gebruiken om verder te komen. In
een driejarig project begeleidt SLO enkele scholen bij het implementeren
van formative assessment in de les. In deze workshop hoort en ziet u de
ervaringen bij Engels.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) emphasises the teacher’s role in
designing the curriculum. This workshop offers an insight into the practice
of IB teachers in Dutch bilingual schools and explores how becoming the
owner of your curriculum (also in a non-bilingual context!) makes teaching
more worthwhile without sacrificing language development.
Wat zijn, naast taaltaken, goede schrijf- of gespreksopdrachten aan de
hand waarvan u kunt zien of uw leerling echt schrijf- of gespreksvaardig is
in een vreemde taal. En hoe kan ik deze productieve vaardigheden dan
beoordelen? Voor beide vaardigheden is het heel goed mogelijk hiervoor
een portfolio in te zetten, dat u als geheel beoordeelt aan de hand van
rubrics. Zelfs voor het schoolexamen. Maar het begint allemaal met goede
opdrachten en die staan centraal tijdens deze workshop. U ontvangt een
aantal opdrachten en een checklist waarmee u uw bestaande opdrachten
kunt evalueren. Vervolgens gaan we gezamenlijk opdrachten ontwikkelen.
Sometimes pronunciation deserves more than a passing correction or oneoff task. In this workshop, we will see how pronunciation points can be
worked on from various different angles, in coherent and enjoyable task
sequences. Participants will try out example activities and discuss them.
www.novellist.nl is a website intended for students of English literature.
The website offers free information to any student (old or young,
experienced or inexperienced) about: books in English (literary, nonliterary, easy, complex), authors, literary terms. Literary and language
levels are included, as well as genre, theme, and other information.

Uitspraakonderwijs in de klas:
voor wie en waarom?
Het afgelopen NCE heb ik een presentatie gegeven over
uitspraakonderwijs met als doeltaal English as a Lingua Franca. Ik heb het
afgelopen jaar een instructiemethode ontwikkeld, en getoetst. Wat blijkt is
dat leerlingen en leraren zich zekerder voelen over hun Engels, en dat hun
uitspraak vooruit gaat. Wat betekent dit voor de toekomst van
uitspraakonderwijs?

Language awareness in your FLclassroom: what, why and how?
EFLtalks is a free space to share expert advice for both new and future EFL
teachers through 10-minute videos from top educators throughout the
world. We have over 500,000 views and 70,000 viewers and were
nominated for the 2016 British Council’s ELTon Award for Innovation in
Teacher Development.
As project manager Personalized Learning at Noordhoff Uitgevers, I will
answer questions such as ‘What constitutes personalized learning and
what doesn’t?’, ‘Where did personalized learning come from and from
what need did it originate?’ and ‘How does Noordhoff Uitgevers
implement this from a practical point of view?’. The new personalized
learning platform will be available for many of the Noordhoff products in
the 2017/2018 school year.
In the ‘Taalwijs’-project (Vrije Universiteit) several lesson series were
created for secondary schools to make students more language aware. We
will talk about the what, why and how of language awareness and focus on
a lesson series in which pupils considered their own language learning
process and the building blocks of a language.

How to seduce students to read
with pleasure?!
Is ‘reading’ a 21st century skill? The students of today are more visually
than verbally oriented and reading doesn’t seem such a skill. We will show
you reading is fun and how you can seduce your students to read more.
You’ll learn tips and tricks to get rid of the ‘boring’ image of reading.

English teachers often find it hard to assess writing assignments and tests.
They see it as a time-consuming exercise the results of which are not
properly appreciated by their students, who keep on making the same
mistakes. I will show why and present an assessment model that is more
efficient and effective.
Wil je graag leren grammatica beter te laten aansluiten op wat taal
eigenlijk is: communicatie?

krijgen.
nakijkwerk. Succes gegarandeerd!

Making an impact – teaching
our students to be global
explorers
In this workshop I will present the preliminary results of a study in which
grammar instruction was excluded from the English classroom during the
first two years of secondary education. We will discuss different views on
second language teaching and share thoughts on grammar in the
classroom.
For teachers who are unsure about dealing with mobile devices in their
classroom or are looking for new ideas to integrate. If the learners can
undertake a part of their own study time and use their own choice of tool,
the interest is often higher, or more sustained. Get the devices back out,
turn them back on!
Teachers have favourite techniques and activities that we think work. But
how do we know? In this session we will review recent research evidence
on e.g. vocabulary learning, listening and reading. We explore how we can
make practical use of this research evidence to promote effective language
learning.
English teacher and Stepping Stones author Alex Schonewille’s goal is the
same for every class he teaches: to inspire his students with practical
lessons and to motivate them to produce as much English as possible.
Collaboration with enthusiastic students who work independently – those
are Alex’s ingredients for a successful English class. Experience in this
workshop how inspiring lesson ideas and practical tips are shared and
carried out.
This session will first look at why and how we can incorporate Life Skills
into the English classroom. It will then offer a variety of practical activities
and approaches to bring different skills alive for our students. Some
potential problems with teaching Life Skills will also be addressed, and
solutions offered.
In this workshop, I will show how we can use real life 21st century
situations and explorers to inspire and educate our students. Together, we
will talk about how to provide the tools and skills our students will need to
go out and make an impact on the world.

Formative assessment: adapting
classroom practices
Students gain knowledge, develop powerful skills and train effective habits
in class. Lessons are challenging and productive. Teachers give individual
formative feedback to students, who in turn become sources of feedback
for teachers. How? Through educational adventures. Experience first-hand
what it is like to participate in these activities in this workshop.

Teaching English through
football-activities to engage
your students more
This workshop will show ways of how to engage students in their English
lessons more using a highly popular topic: football. The activities presented
will focus on group work, games, experiential learning, on-site research
and mini-presentations. All of that can easily be integrated into the
classroom and help teachers to move towards a more learner-centred
experience.

Blended learning and the
flipped classroom
In this presentation answers will be given to questions like: What is
blended learning? The benefit of blended learning. How to deal with it.
What not to do. The teacher’s task, a flipped task.
There are some handouts from blended learning coursebooks to clarify this
and there are some questions for reflection and to answer. These
questions (4) are about blended language learning, the role of the teacher,
the role of the learner and the changing nature of the ‘classroom’.
