Profesor Dafermos received a Diploma in Civil Engineering from the National Technical
University of Athens (1964) and a PhD in Mechanics from the Johns Hopkins University
(1967). He has served as a Professor at Brown University in Providence, RI (USA) since
1975.Since1984,hehasbeentheAlumin-AlumnaeUniversityProfessoratBrown.
Dafermoshasestablishedhimselfasoneoftheworld’s
topexpertsinthetheoryofconservationlaws.Hehas
madeseminalcontributionsintroducinginnovativeand
powerfulnewmethodsandapplyingthetheoryof
conservationlawstoareassuchascontinuummechanics,
gasdynamicsandnonlinearelasticity.Heiswidelyknown
forhisbook«HyperbolicConservationLawsinContinuum
Physics»,whichisconsideredtobetheauthoritative
guidetothesubject.
DafermoswasawardedtheHonoraryDoctoratefromUniversityofAthensin1987,from
theNationalTechnicalUniversityofGreecein1991,fromUniversityofCretein2001.He
receivedtheSIAMW.T.andIdaliaReidPrizein2000,theCataldoeAngiolaAgostinelli
Prizein2011,theGALILEOMedalin2012andthePrizeoftheInternationalSociety
fortheInteractionofMechanicsandMathematicsin2014.
In2016hewaselectedtotheU.S.NationalAcademyofSciencesandawardedthe
AMSNorbertWienerPrize.Amongothermemberships,heisacorrespondent
memberoftheAcademyofAthens.
