raffinati nello scrivere. Fred cara, fai schifo. Peggiorati un po', per piacere! Qui si rischia un
complesso d'inferiorità che sarà difficile recuperare: capiscimi.
La fluidità si lega all'incisività e la ricchezza all'essenzialità : la prosa strilla "Puuuuù! Guarda
Sei all'altezza, tuuuu, misera lettrice?".

Fred Vargas is the nom de plume of French historian, archeologist and writer Frédérique

Only four of her books have been translated into English so far; it's nice to know I have something
to live for.
I have a passion for intricate, existentially-eviscerated crime fiction (especially of the Scandinavian

I have a passion for intricate, existentially-eviscerated crime fiction (especially of the Scandinavian
variety), so it's with the fanaticism of the connoisseur that I acclaim Vargas as the best of the very
best. These books (I've starred all of them) are brilliant, mixing a deep knowledge of the most
improbable arcana into delicious plots of labyrinthine complexity.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with the Nancy Drew books and stayed up way past my bedtime

contributed to the experience.

stayed in during the mid-term breaks were often the setting for my reading, which probably
contributed to the experience.
In my adult life, I've weirdly refrained from murder-mysteries or detective novels, even though they
were an obsession when I was a child. I've always been interested in crime - an avid watcher of
crime documentaries and follower of large court cases. And yet, I don't bring this interest of mine
into my reading life.
Thankfully, I was afforded the opportunity to read this great detective novel by Fred Vargas (a
pseudonym for Frédérique Audoin-Rouzeau, a French female historian) that my Ma bought me
for Christmas. She always had all these sorts of books on the family bookshelf and one day I asked
her who Fred Vargas was, as she had so many of them (hers were the German translations though
so I couldn't borrow them).
This was a marvellous detective story that I was immersed in from the beginning. This book had a
strange atmosphere (if it's possible that a book can have an atmosphere). At first, I thought it was
set in a medieval period - a discussion of the plague, a town crier in Paris, it all set this historic
scene in my mind. It was only when mentions of modern technology (such as mobile phones) were
brought up that I realised it was modern day. It's very interesting and Frédérique
Audoin-Rouzeau really shows in her writing that she is a historian.
The story has just the right pace, sprinkled with elements of magical-realism and humour, as well as
a generous helping of interesting and well-structured characters, it kept me interested the entire way
through.
The only reason this wasn't a five-star book is that I was displeased with certain elements of the
ending.
I'd recommend this series to anyone who enjoys murder-mysteries or detective stories. It's dark,
moody and enthralling. I'm looking forward to my next read from her.

coinvolgente.
