NCAR ICE Initiative
Outline:
NCAR “Strategic Initiative” Process
Clouds, Ice and Precipitation
2003 - Opportunity Fund, “ICE Initiation in Clouds”
2004 - Proposal
February 12, 2004 meeting
What is a “Strategic Initiative”
What is a “Strategic Initiative”
• encourage NCAR division partnerships
(ATD + ACD + MMM + ..)
• hire early-career scientists
• enhance university interactions
• involve the scientific community
• provide a leadership role
• multi-year
How does it work ?
Internal proposals submitted to NCAR
Director (Tim Killeen)
• deadline ~ October
Funding is modest
• hold back a fraction of base funds and
redistribute to initiatives
• NCAR division support (salaries, equipment)
• participants outside NCAR find their own
funding (NSF, NASA, ..)
– except some visitor support, travel, workshops
Proposal selection criteria
• scientific excellence
•
•
•
•
•
•
broader impacts – beyond narrow discipline
uniqueness – fit NCAR’s capabilities
appropriateness – fit NCAR’s mission
staff commitment
timeliness
opportunity

2003 - Opportunity Fund – one year
“Ice Initiation in Clouds: A Proposal to Develop an NCAR
Ice Initiative”:
• scientific need for studying ice formation
• form working groups NCAR + outside
scientific steering committee
• workshops & guest speakers
• support visitors at MMM
– Axel Seifert, post-doc
– Ottmar Möhler (Karlsruhe), visitor
– part-time scientist to help organize the Initiative
