NOAA/ESRL/PSD and NOAA/AOML/HRD HWRF Hybrid
Data Assimilation Effort
• ‘Latest’ HWRF source has been obtained from DTC
• HWRF has been configured using the basin-scale design provided by NCEP/EMC
• HWRF  GSI  ENKF machinery is in place; currently testing cycling capabilities
and determining strategies for partial versus continuous cycling
• Implementing fault tolerances and checks required to run the system for the HFIP
2012 Summer Demo
• Thus far, the HWRF GSI  ENKF has been tested using conventional (e.g.,
synoptic and TC-vitals) data; working toward the assimilation of satellite data
• Currently cycling the HWRF  GSI  ENKF to compute the bias correction
coefficients to assimilate the available satellite data (e.g., radiances) using first the
ENKF only and the (eventual) hybrid system

The NCEP GDAS parallel run global analysis is providing the lateral boundary and initial
conditions
All data assimilated for the NCEP GDAS is being assimilated for HWRF
HWRF SSTs are updated daily using the available NCEP data
• A WRF-ARW configuration, using the same grid projection for HWRF, is also being
designed and tested
