TEL - What is it good for?
Technology Enhanced Learning research

TEL Research group
A research team at the CSC-school that also
includes several researchers from the ECEschool.
The common denominator is an interest in the
combination of learning and technology and
the idea that that technology can enhance
learning experiences!

So, why TEL?
● We like Technology
● We work with teaching/learning/training/
education in some way
● BUT, we see no need of technology for
technology's own sake
If the learning situation is not enhanced by
technology X, there is no need for X.
But always ask Y!
Some views on Technology and Learning
- Learning - seen as a (human) activity with
an objective
- Technology - “an extension of ourselves”
[McLuhan] that can enhance the learning
experience
Activity Theory and Learning
Activity Theory - focuses on human activity
where it is assumed the interaction between a
subject (learner) and the rest of the world is
socio-culturally determined and can not be fully
understood by being studied separately.
Each activity has an objective and is carried
out with a mediating artifact (tool)

Thus, research on e-learning will be a subset of
research in TEL

- Technology can be used to enhance and
enrich learning experiences
- Research in TEL is good for: creating
knowledge on when the use of (a certain)
technology can enhance the learning
experience or learning situation
