Intro lab
• I can… problem solve using the scientific method with a
team.
• Warm Up: What is a dilemma or problem you have
solved lately? How did you go about solving it?
• Turn in: Signed syllabus (only back sheet- front STAYS
IN BINDER) in ‘completed work’ bin on front desk.
WARM UP
• Sam has been spending his summer boating on the Great
Lakes. But he’s not too bright (after all, the brains of
worms are pretty small!) He’s never learned how to swim
and he never wears his life preserver. The worst has
happened- Sam’s boat capsized and he is stuck!
Fortunately, his life preserver is in the boat, but
unfortunately he does not know how to reach it without
falling off and drowning.
Saving Sam!!
• Save Sam and create a safety procedure for the boat
company in case of future repeats.
Your Task
• How can your team save Sam using only 4 paper clips,
while each person can only touch one paper clip, without
drowning Sam?
• you may not touch the boat, Sam or the life preserver with
anything but paperclips
• you may not puncture the life preserver (or it won’t float) or
Sam (he will die!)
• if you knock Sam off, you must restart.
