Transcript Ch 10 Courage Lesson (Character Tasks)

Today’s Goal
To better understand the idea of
“courage” and “maturity” and how it
relates to different characters in TKAM.
Task #1: Courage Quotes
• The world isn't interested in the storms you encountered,
but whether or not you brought in the ship.–Raul Armesto
• Courage is not the lack of fear. It is acting in spite of it.
– Mark Twain
• Courage, sacrifice, determination, commitment, toughness,
heart, talent, guts. That's what little girls are made of; the
hell with sugar and spice. – Unknown
• Strength and courage aren't always measured in medals and
victories. They are measured in the struggles they overcome.
The strongest people aren't always the people who win, but
the people who don't give up when they lose. – Ashley
Hodgeson
• In your own words, define COURAGE.
Task #2: Courageous Characters
• What characters have
displayed courage in
TKAM?
• Name that character
and find one direct
quote that displays
the courageous act.
Task #3: Character Sketch
• PICK ONE of these characters (Atticus, Jem,
Scout, Miss Caroline, Calpurnia, Aunt
Alexandra, Uncle Jack). Find ONE physical
description and TWO quotes that reflect
their attitudes and/or beliefs.
– Based on the physical description, draw a picture
of the character.
– Include all THREE direct quotes on your drawing.
Task #4: Your Opinion
• This novel is a bildungsroman. It is story about a
young girl coming of age
• Your Opinion: How is Scout maturing throughout
the novel? Find textual evidence that shows how
she is changing.
• Create a timelime of
with three events that
demonstrate her
maturation (Scout
maturing).
