Transcript Why Reconsider Assessment in Graduate Education?

Why Reconsider Assessment in
Graduate Education?
• National/International Contexts
– Collective desire for better articulation of what students and communities can
expect from educational experiences at all levels, including across borders
– Strong interest in what investment yields
– Higher education scholarship has laid a path toward high-quality educational
practice. How do we benefit from this knowledge at the graduate level?
• State/Local Contexts
– Are we a good investment for ourselves as citizens to make?
– Are we serving our communities in ways that enrich us all?
• Programmatic Contexts
– External review processes formerly felt like a summative judgment in which
limitations were penalized
– Paths through assessment that focus on learning and growth are possible
– How are we doing in our (potentially transformative) educational
relationships?
– Can we do better? If so, how? For whom?
