Types of Biohazardous Waste

Solid
– Labware (flasks, tubes, plates, bottle, vials)
– Lab waste (stocks, specimens, cultures, swabs,
tissue, plastic pipettes or pipette tips)
– Contaminated gloves, apparel, wipes

Liquid
– Sera, body fluids

Sharps
– Anything with a point or edge capable of
piercing or cutting (razors, needles, syringes,
glass slides)
Biohazardous Waste

Dry Solids
– Collect in a rigid leak resistant container
with a lid and labeled with the
Biohazard Symbol that is lined with a
“RED” bag and labeled with:
 The words “Biohazard”
 Must have International Biohazard symbol
 SDSU’s Name Address and Phone number.

– If you are not trained, do not handle
biohazardous liquid waste.

– Collect in a rigid, puncture and leak
resistant, properly labeled sharps
container.

symbol and the word: “Biohazard”
 “Generator Address Label” attached

If you need to dispose of biohazardous waste or
a sharps container, call EH&S (x46778) to
arrange a pick up. NEVER place it in the regular
municipal trash.

Q: If come across a blood spill or some type of
body fluid, what should I do?

A: Unless it is your own blood or fluid, do not try
to clean it up. Call Physical Plant’s Work Control
(x44754) or EH&S (x46778) to have someone
clean it. Only people with specific training on
blood borne pathogens or infectious agents
should clean up this type of spill!!

biological waste material, do I have to dispose of
them in a Biohazardous Sharps container?

A: Yes, because it is the safest means to dispose
