Identidades culturales: nación
y etnia.

National identity – like other concepts based
on binary oppositions – is defined in an
exclusive relationship of difference from
others (Scottishness or Welshness are
defined against Englishness) that is most
often tied to place…or lack of it, as for
example, in the demands of Kurds in Iran,
Iraq and Turkey. Often these factors are
linked to language, history and culture (or
race). (Weedon, Chris, 2004: 20)



Language often assumed to signify a
common culture and identity.
States and institutions mobilize flags etc as
icons of national identity.
Globalization has problematized the issue of
national identity.
Britishness in question

Contemporary attempts to include
representations of a multiethnic reality in the
media marks a major shift from immediate
post-war decades when exclusively white
norms of Britishness were hegemonic and
assimilation dominated thinking about
migrants to Britain (Weedon, Chris, 2004: 23)
