Makeup of the 1920’s
The 1920’s was full of fresh faced iconic makeup looks and
were usually represented by women. Makeup was worn
quite often for any occasion and consisted of many
elements such as eyeshadows, face powders, lipsticks,
and so many more!
The Eye Makeup Look
Women in the 1920’s often wore dark makeup on their
eyes usually accompanied with black blurred eyeliner, dark
greyish and blackish tones of eyeshadow, and long
luscious lashes painted black.
How to Recreate the Eye Makeup
Look
● Apply the darkened eyeshadow of your choice to the lid
with a flat brush
● Next line your eyes with a pencil liner
● Last but not least coat your eyelashes with
your favorite black mascara
and wala! You have mastered the 1920’s
eye makeup look!
The Lipstick Look
The popular 1920’s lipsticks included colors such as
deep red, deep brownish reds, plum and orange. Lipstick
was usually applied to the top of the lip in a ¨Cupid’s-Bow¨
form. Lipstick applied to the bottom lip was exaggerated to
create the illusion of a bigger lip.
How to Recreate the Lipstick Look
● First pick out your favorite lipstick color according to the 1920’s and
purchase a lip liner stick with a similar color along with it. Make sure to
include colors such as oranges and reds.
● Apply your lipliner in a “cupid’s-Bow” shape around the outline of your lips
to create this illusion.
● Once youŕe satisfied with the shape apply the lipstick on top of the lip liner
on your lips and youŕe all set to show off your new look!
Women’s Clothing
Women’s clothing is composed of three main styles which
would include:
● an unfeminine look
● girly and preppy
● party/night out clothing
Unfeminine Look
The unfeminine look was based off of
men’s clothing. It was basic colors, a
sleek body figure, long suit-like jackets
with a low waisted pencil skirt with light
colored stockings and short heel shoes.
Women wore these clothes to express
high independence and diversity.
Girly and Preppy
Look
In the 1920’s, the dresses most
commonly did not sit at your waist,
they would have a ribbon or tie on or
just below your hips. The dresses were
silk or satin and the length came from
your ankles to just below the knee.
Lace trim was prevalent in some
dresses as were other adornments.
Party/Night Out Look
The most common and well known look worn to
parties is the flapper. This look is not complicated
to re-create. Flappers had layered fringe dresses
embellished with small beads and intricate lace.
Tassels were a fun edition to the dress and along
with the fringe, they shook a lot when you danced.
The dresses would often be more neutral colors
like beige, grey, or light yellows and greens.
Men’s Clothing
All men’s clothing was fairly similar, composed with a
simple tux, a bow or tie and a fedora hat. Men’s popular
clothing consisted of:
● The gangster look
● Daily wear
● party wear
Gangster Look
The gangster look is probably the most recognised style for men in the
1920’s. It became well known from the famous gangster Al Capone, who
was most known during the twenties for his crime and offense. Al Capone
made the gangster look very popular. He and
many other gang members of the 1920’s
generally wore:
● Fedora hats
● Striped black and white suits
● long ties
● platform shoes
Men’s Daily Wear
● platform or oxford shoes
● knit sweaters
● plaited “knickers” or
long pants
● printed tie or bow
● straw or fedora hat
● suit jackets or vests

Accessories
Hats were such an acclaimed part of the lifestyle that both men
and women sported the look daily no matter the event. There
was the cloche hat that could be dressed up or down and every
women wore. They would have large ribbons and bows
attached to these. There was also a larger hat with a wider
brim and these were a fancier style. They would have more frill
to them. The hats would have flowers made of silk or satin and
larger bows. The big feature of the larger hats was the feathers. Many of
them would have peacock or other kinds of feathers attached.
Shoes
For men's shoes they mainly wore leather loafers and oxfords.
Oxfords were appropriate for all occasions from parties to
business meetings to an afternoon at the club. There was not
much variance in men’s shoes. Women’s shoes were made of
silk, satin, and leather. They laced up or had straps and
ribbons as laces. Some shoes looked like heeled women’s
oxfords. They came up to your ankles and usually did not
come above that. Most women’s shoes had a heel that was
around one to three inches.
Budget for
Accessories
The budget for accessories should reflect what you want to
do with your look and how far you want to take it. If you
want to focus mainly on the actual clothes, then you are
going to have less of a budget for accessories than if you
wanted to add a lot of spark to your look with extras. It also
depends on which accessories we decide upon and
whether they are more or less expensive. For accessories,
our budget is $40 in all or $10 per person.
